Any Carry Optics Rules changes coming?
« on: July 22, 2018, 09:23:04 AM »
I just started competing in USPSA and IDPA Carry Optics and I'm wondering if there's any changes on the horizon that 'may' be coming to the rules?

I was a little surprised to learn that USPSA did away with the 10 round limit. Although I suppose that makes CO more 'fun'; but that also seems to encourage guns set up more like OPEN class.

IDPA has the 10 round limit, but size limits still allow some fairly large 'carry' guns.

I'm trying to gain practical experience with RDS as my 'Super-Senior eyes' just can't compete with IRONS anymore. I've set up my factory stock SP-01 Tactical, P-09, P-07, and P-01 with RDS; but before making any mods I'm trying to get a sense of where CO is headed.

I do believe in time, optics on handguns will become as commonplace as scopes on rifles. They're that much faster and more accurate once past the 'learning curve'.

Any shared knowledge appreciated. -Vinny
P.S. sorry if I posted earlier in wrong section.

I would expect USPSA?s CO division to stay fairly static for now.  Seems like there was a noticable increase in CO participation with the last rules change, so thinking the BoD is happy with the outcome for now.

Don?t know about IDPA.

Yes, hopefully both USPSA and IDPA BoD have seen an uptick in CO participation.
I believe it helps those with aging eyes to stay in the game; and especially those who simply want to add an optic to their current gun, without having to compete in OPEN with the racers.
Of course calling it 'provisional' subject to change is why I've asked the question.
IDPA has the following CO rules posted on their website including a modification of the box to accommodate the optic:

CO participants are increasing in the IDPA matches I have attended.

There are still no clear and firm rules for IDPA. Some want SSP rules for the gun and some want ESP rules but nothing from HQ. I am hoping after the nationals they will get together on rules and a Classifier for CO.

I think the USPSA Carry Optics rules are pretty stable at the moment.  If I had to guess what the next change could be, I would have to assume they would maybe increase the weight limit so the Tanfo and Shadow 2 guns could make weight a little easier.  Not sure about IDPA.

The 10 round limit going away has me reconsidering the class in USPSA. I have been building an SP-01 for and was about to send the slide out to get cut. Maybe this saves me a ton of money since I have not bought the DeltaPoint I wanted.
Just a SP-01 with Pro Package and soon a Leupold Deltapoint for Carry Optics

Huh? I just built an SP-01, milled by CZ Custom with a DPPro. Just waiting on delivery of a holster. I thought it would be perfect for both IDPA (mags loaded with 10) and USPSA Carry-Optics (loaded to the max mag length). Am I missing something??

I live in California, so getting standard or high cap mags is technically not legal. Puts me at a disadvantage in the class then when everyone else (legal or otherwise) runs 17+

Well, that stinks.
I can understand USPSA eliminating the 10 round limit because most states allow you to carry at least 15.
Unfortunately, they whacked you twice because everything in CO is scored minor. If Carry Optics had both minor and major like other classes; you could run something like a CZ 97 and DPPro with 10 rounds. At least for you though the playing field is level in IDPA.  Sorry. now I understand your dilemma.

Yep, would be nice if they made a CO-10 class though like they did for Limited.

There is always rule 3.3.1 for those states with a 10 rnd mag ban

Good point.
Fortunately, I live in a Southeastern state with no mag limit bans.

However, I'm just trying to understand Broadside's concern.
Does Cal USPSA even allow anyone to use mags greater than 10?
If not, then it's effectively CO-10. IDPA or USPSA. Maybe loading a Barney +1 is OK at make-ready?

If I asked for 3.3.1 to be enforced I would be the most hated person at any match I attend.

I plead the 5th to your question about what people use in the Lvl I matches I go to.... But I don't feel like risking my freedom, money, CCW, FFL, etc by getting caught with mag that hold more than 10 rounds.

I normally shoot single stack major, so I am limited to 8 rounds, plus a barney if start condition allows
