School me on the Bren 2 vs CZ 807
« on: August 22, 2018, 03:44:39 PM »
I've been following the development of the Bren 2 and the 807 to the best of my ablility.  I know that the Bren 2 seems to have been optimized for Czech/US/NATO type requirements.  However, from what I can tell, the 807 is very similar aside from barrel length (14" for the longest current Bren 2 variant (until the commercial NFA compliant version comes out) vs 16" for the 807 as standard), selector switch markings and the charging handle (Bren 2's doesn't reciprocate when firing, while the 807's does move with the bolt).

Other than those differences and different markets being aimed at, how are these two rifles related and how are they different?

First question - you mean the 805? All we have here is the 805.
The other changes are the BREN 2 has a shorter and lighter receiver, different folding stock design, and some other minor changes that were all feedback from troops in the field. I can't wait to get hands on with one, but we'll see.

Would that mean that when/if the civilian variant comes out would it get it's own forum area?  I've seen quite a few topics in the 805 section about the Bren 2.

Well, I'm confused - is the 807 the same as the Bren 2 or not?

Vid on the 807:

Same on the Bren 2:

Impressive, but would rather have 7.62x39 and / or 6.5 Grendel over 5.56.

If the civilian BREN 2 comes out then that subforum will be renamed BREN only, to prevent confusion, and prevent multiple wild fire subforums. We had that problem in the past, made things very confusing. I personally am hoping for sooner than later, myself. :) The BREN 2 was, IIRC now that I think about, originally called the 807, and may still be marketed as such overseas, but they are imported here as the BREN 2, currently select fire LE/Government only. :(
MeatAxe, I would love to see a BREN in 6.5 Grendel, I'd sell blood plasma for a year to buy one. :)

Bren 2 is out in 7.62x39mm already, as adopted by Hungary and the French GIGN.  However, to the best of my knowledge, there's no pure semi-auto commercial version out as of yet, even in Europe.

Here's an article on the 807 and it's torture tests (that I also assume that the Bren 2 also had to pass):

https://www.sadefensejournal.com/wp/?p=3439

Seems like the 807 is a "simplified" Bren 2 offered mostly for export primarily in 7.62x39mm convertible to 5.56 NATO (the Bren 2 is offered the other way around, 5.56-7.62mm).  The Bren 2s also have shorter barrels (longest is currently 14 inches aside from the hopefully coming US NFA compliant version) and also has the bolt lock/release in the trigger guard in addition to the AR-15 style bolt release (the 807 has that bolt release).

However, aside from those details, the look very similar.

They dropped that designation some time ago.

The Bren 807 had its roots in a 7.62x39 variant for the Indian (now dropped) Pakistan and Egyptian militaries.  It is still listed on the CZ international website.   You can use their comparison tool for the different Bren models and then translate the page with Google translate (right click mouse on page when using Chrome and select from menu).

Also below is a link to the history of the 807 and its product page on the CZ web site.  Haven't checked to see if there are any material differences between the Bren 807 and the new Bren 2.  Sometimes vendors give different model numbers of the same product through different channels like Costco and flat panel TVs.
