I added the step of looking inside the case mouth prior to resizing/decapping, along with crack/bulge/hole check. I've found a couple - they went in the recycle bag.

I've always sorted by headstamp all of the once fired that I bought.  I need to look through the Misc. bag for stepped casings.

Thanks for the heads up on this.

I looked at those two "offenders" yesterday before priming a bunch of Winchester 9MM brass - MaxxTech was the head stamp on the base of those cases.  Very pronounced step part of the way down into the case mouth/case wall.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I have a 1050 with a Mark VII autoloader.  Some of these stepped cases hang at my resizing station, and some pass through.  Haven't actually sat down to figure out why that's the case (no pun intended).

I was wondering if I could cobble together some back-up rod contraption at the priming or swaging step such that it would offer a hard stop as a method of detecting them before you wasted a primer.

Seems like a Powder Cop type setup, that checks the height of powder by feel could be setup (possibly using a special tip) to look for that "step" inside the case.

At the swage station, the backup rod/expander could be fashioned such that the lower part is a bit larger, enough to catch that step of the case, without affecting the resizing part. I guess that requires careful review of the variations of these internal step IDs relative to a normal case. That would be a hard stop on the handle, or a clutch stop on the Mark VII. Problem is there's no market for such a specialized die. Or I can envision a shaft collar with set screw that is JUUUUUST the right size to catch at the step but not at the ID of a normal case, that could be attached to the back up rod.   That would probably break within 50 cycles...More trouble than it's worth probably
