Brand new P09 breech face damaged?
« on: December 12, 2018, 11:41:39 PM »
Not a fan of Steel casings, but went to range yesterday and let friend shoot my gun. I was out of 9 mm brass rounds. I normally shoot the Winchester 9 mm FMJ 115 grain in the red and white box bought at Walmart. I also have a Taurus PT111 G2C, but my friend has the G2. And, he shoots the Winchester steel casing rounds in the brown box which he either buys at Academy Sports or Walmart. I've not heard good things about steel casing rounds. He wanted to shoot my gun and all he had was his cheap ass Winchester steel casing rounds. If anybody likes those then don't mean to offend. I'll let him shoot only five rounds a steel casing through my po9 which I just bought November 28th. I clean my gun after every range session which is once or twice a week. I noticed a divot on the breech face opposite the extractor last night while cleaning. I saw a video on YouTube where those Winchester steel rounds in the brown box we're out of spec or had different tolerances meaning one bullet may be micromillimeters larger.

I took a picture of it and sent to CZ warranty via email and someone by the name of Corey replies and says that's normal, so I'm going to try to post a picture and see what some other po9 owners think. I thought I knew my gun forwards and backwards as much as I clean it or have cleaned it. Just by looking at the indentation where it looks like the primer rim or rear part rear rim of the bullet wedged itself in there and chipped out a piece of metal. I replied back to CZ telling warranty I don't think that that's part of the gun Manufacturing because I use brushes and scrapers to get hard baked on carbon off and I don't remember any divit the last time I cleaned it which would have been about three nights ago. If anybody could take a picture of their breech face on their po9 and show me what's yours looks like then that would be appreciated. I won't be able to get back by the gun shop until this weekend and they're closed on Sundays so most definitely a no-go. I work odd hours so I won't be able to get by there to look at a brand new gun to compare it to my breech face to see if Cory at CZ warranty was full of crap.

This looks exactly like my P-09 breechface. Same cut, same location. I assume that it is normal. If you look closely at a 75 variants breechface you can see similar things. I assume it is there to assist feeding or extraction. It dose look strange though, i can see how one could think that it was some kind of chip.

I have been examining my CZs inside and out for years now, still finding new things that i had not noticed.

Yeah that's normal,My P-07 looks very similar. There's no way possible you did any breach face damage with steel cased ammo that fast. Even very old military steel cased ammo would take many thousands of rounds to wear the breach and it wouldn't be like that anyway.
CZ customer service is very good and if there's a REAL issue they will take care of you. Corey is not "full of crap".

Ditto for my P07 !  Thanks though, since I did notice a little brass deposition I've been missing at cleanup.

Well I'll be.. just checked my P-07 and it's exactly the same.  I assume my P-09 is as well but am too lazy to dig it out right now.

Yes, you are fine.

I would have bet someone $100 that cut wasn't there on the breech face and, OBVIOUSLY, would have lost that bet. Good to know it's not a defect and I dont have to send off for warranty because I absolutely love shooting that gun.😁 I clean my gun after every range session which is once or twice a week.....sometimes more. I never noticed it and I use picks and brushes sometimes, after letting marinate in CLP or Ballistol.

Cory responded back with proof...a pic of a P-07 with same groove. I thought he was BS'ing me, but he was correct. Proof is in the pudding(in the pic he sent). Thanks to all who replied.

My P-07 (a DUTY) has the same sort of indentation, except that mine almost looks as though it was machined...

I would argue that the area being discussed isn't the breech face, but an area on the slide near/adjoining the breech face -- but I don't know what it should be called.  The breech face is that flat surface that pushes the cartridge into the chamber and through which the firing pin (or striker) protrudes when it ignites the primer.

That cut is supposed to be there, it holds the rim in place, and prevents it from slipping off the extractor, breechface. If anything, this is a reliabilty upgrade, if you look at any Glock, for example, they don't have this cut, they depend on the next round in the magazine pushing up, to keep fired cases on the extractor until it hits the ejector.. you'll find this cut on HK's as well.

Walt Sherrill - I wasnt sure if area I was talking about was breech face or not and was probably incorrect in my initial explanation. At the time I was grasping at staws, so to speak, to identify that area and if it was a defect or manufactured with a purpose. So, apologize if mis identified the area. Im still learning. I actually had to Google that area to know to call it "breech face"...lol. Im still a newbie. 😁

badwrench - thanks for your explanation and input. I'm here to learn...👍
As much as I love CZ Firearms. Id love an HK P30L with compensator to add to my small collection, to date.....John Wick.😁 Hope its not taboo to mention I want a Heckler and Koch pistol as well on a CZ forum.

I think I would have referred to it as the breech face area too.  Or at least on the edge of it.
Don't sweat it.  We're all here to learn something, and I just did!
