D650 223 conv kit arrives today, along with CGW goodies
« on: March 01, 2019, 12:16:24 PM »
Wohoo! my used D650 223 conv. kit is due to arrive today, Its Friday, payday, I lost 3 pounds from yesterday (after having 2 doughnuts for breakfast), and CGW 10x bushing and Ext safety arrive today as well. I'm waiting for todays luck to even out.

I've been loading the 223 though the single stage with lee deluxe dies, This should speed things up quite a bit. I plan on having a brass prep/trim head and a load head. I've been using H335 and 55gn BTs & some 69gn Bts. I couldn't tell much of a difference between the two (I think my lackluster groups were mainly due to a cheap barrel, crappy trigger and my shooting ability), so I'll probably go with the 55 gn bullets for the most part, probably bob's bullets or similar.

Does anyone else prefer chucking the primer champher tool in a hand drill opposed to swaging or is it just me?
Do y'all champher/deburr and crimp AR ammo?

Next paycheck is a CMP garand and -06 conv kit!
That's all, Happy Friday!

? Previously, I simply bought a common 82? single-flute countersink cutter and put it in my drill press. I'd de-prime the case and touch each pocket to the spinning cutter for 1/2 second. Job done.

Then I got given one of those motorized RCBS "case prep" centers with 3 cutters and 2 brushes spinning. It sits on the bench next to the trimmer. It's does the same thing and saves the walk over to the drill press, so that's what I use now.

? It is not necessary to crimp common 223 for the range. You can add a small crimp if it makes you feel better, but you're not going to really achieve anything.

? You know, if starting out on a common rifle cartridge, especially 223 where the volumes are likely to be large, I might buy a motor and put a Giraud cutter on one end to do all the trimming and a countersink on the other to de-swage the primer pocket. Touch both ends of the case to both ends of the motor and you're completely done in less than 2 seconds. No extra handling.
