Quick Draw Shots and Grip Angle
« on: April 18, 2019, 05:16:14 PM »
I started practicing drawing and shooting as quickly as possible recently. I have been using my P10c and have been fighting the tendency to shoot low and left. I wondered if a different grip angle would help with this type of shooting and picked up a Steyr M9-A1 today. I just put 50 rounds through it today. I tried a mag on the old sheet of paper at 8 yards and for the first time, kept every shot on paper. So far, I cannot put a nice slow-fire group together with the Steyr like I can with the P10c, but the Steyr points naturally in fast fire for me. I found I did not even need to focus on the sights and force the shot into place. The pistol just seemed to fall back on target without much effort.

Do some Dry Fire to establish your ?index?. Dry firing correctly builds up muscle memory and when you draw, you can even have your eyes close and still have your sights on the target. It takes awhile to get it but it beats wasting ammo unless you have a lot to shoot.

By the way, how fast are your quick shots? Six shots in 2, 3 seconds or more? How fast are your splits? Do you have a timer?

I do need to start dry-firing. I have been using a shot timer on my phone, but it seems to miss shots here and there. I was using it with three shots at a time the other day and my times were around 3 seconds (most over 3 but under 4 seconds). I was drawing the p10c from an IWB kydex holster, strong-side, with an untucked shirt covering the pistol. I didn't track time today with the M9-A1.

I've dry fired extensively with my P10 and shot several matches with it. It just doesn't point for me as well as my 75. I finally decided to quit forcing the issue and went back to the 75.
