SP-01 Tactical - CGW Pro Package Results
« on: April 25, 2019, 12:06:47 PM »
So after shooting USPSA carry optics with a G34 for a while, I got bitten by the CZ for competition bug.  The Shadow 2 was just too expensive to justify purchasing all new mags, holsters, milling, ect.  But my LGS had a used SP-01 Tactical for $350 and I couldn't resist.  It was in the rental program for 2 years and saw a decent number of rounds but I wasn't worried. I knew I wanted to slick it up and replace most of the parts with Cajun go-fast goodies anyway.  I ordered the Decocker Pro Package, an 11# recoil spring, SS guiderod, Shadow 2 mag release, and a spare lifter spring.

While waiting for the parts, I got familiar with the mechanisms by truing and smoothing every wear point I could find.  I dressed the slide/frame rails with stones, stoned and polished the slide rib, honed the firing pin tunnel, polished the FP Block, and honed the lifter hole. I smoothed out the mag release figure-8 channel, inner frame surfaces, and sear cage with stones, file-backed sandpaper (800 through 2000) grit, and light finish polishing with a Dremel cloth buffing wheel.  All the pins and small parts were polished up to 2000 grit, and I tuned the mag release spring and set the trigger bar lifter spring to stay in the grooves in the trigger bar.  I also changed the profile so it wouldn't contact mags.  Mec-Gar mags practically shoot out of the gun now.  Pretty much the only thing I left alone was the sear nose.

I won't go into the install since there are plenty of other videos and posts, but I did have one small issue.  The trigger was resetting early, allowing me to drop the hammer before the trigger bar disengaged the FP block lifter.  I had to file down the sear leg until the trigger reset on the lifter only.  I must have had the sear cage apart a dozen times to check my fit. Ugh.  Anyways, here are the results:  I installed the new trigger and floating trigger pin for the before pics to keep things consistent.  The CGW pics have the pre/over-travel screws adjusted.  I also stitched the photos into a GIF.  I'm loving the trigger.  The new DA pull weight is the same as the old SA pull weight.  DA is almost as smooth as my Beretta and the SA break rivals my tuned 1911s, though the reset isn't as short.  I know I could get the DA lower with an 11.5# mainspring but I like the extra oomph of the 13#.
