I just happened to stumble across some of the reviews for this new model from Taurus as I was just nosing around the comments and reviews for the equally new Keltec CP33. What I was noticing seemed to be a variety of reviewers that pretty well synced in their comments about the TX22 as being reliable through a broad ammo spectrum, very reasonably accurate, and very reasonably priced. Apart from the very light weight ( basically same as SR22, P22, M&P22c) it has a very full size fit and feel. Plus it runs from a 16 rd magazine with a nice, crisp, short reset, striker action. The original model has a frame mounted safety lever but it can be had without. It carries an msrp on par with similar models from Ruger, Walther, S&W. It also comes with a factory threaded barrel and 1/2x28 adapter. Kind of a downside are the plastic magazines but there seem to be fellas who have several thousand round counts without complaint about the mags. And heck, I’ve got poly mags for my AR’s that I have no problem in accepting. Besides it’s not like these mags are priced at 40-50$, either. More like $20.
So I was kind of waiting for a sale price that would make it too good to pass up assuming that maybe by year end or so it might drop. Turns out that they can be found in the $250 range and Taurus is offering a $50 rebate. Good enough!
Out of this I expect reliability, not stellar accuracy. Good enough for steel accuracy but not on par with the Kadet or my trusty ol’ single six.
Several hundred rounds and I’m impressed. I only shot paper enough to adjust the sight picture a bit, and that just offhand. I like the trigger. The safety is good enough to be usable and small enough to be ignored if desired. It very much has the feel and handling characteristics of many full-sizes striker guns and it gives nothing up by being a 22. I only ran blazer and golden bullet with only a few misfeeds; no more than would be otherwise expected from rimfire rounds and all a bit early on. A couple were just refusal to fully chamber. I checked these after and they were just a bit tight going in and I assume the chamber is on the smallish side. I put them in the Kadet without issue.
I like the thing. It does quite well enough and didn’t cost an arm and a leg. I’ll have toa paper poking comparison one day with the Kadet but for now I need to ring some steel while the weather is decent. I will be getting a can for it and then I’ll have to get the Kadet threaded, too, I suppose. As any Kadet shooter here can testify there is little more fun than a 22 auto pistol that runs well!
