CZ 70 SAFETY PROBLEM
« on: May 26, 2009, 12:31:25 PM »
Hi,
I am new here and I don't know English very well, so please forgive possible mistakes.
We have a CZ 70 in our shooting club and we are facing a serious problem regarding the safety of the pistol.
As you know the pistol has 3 stage safety. Up for fire, middle for safe, far low for decocking.
The problem that appeared is that when you go from the fire, up, position to the safe, middle, position the hammer falls and sometimes the pistols fires, without even touching the trigger,  in the process .
Can you , please, figure out why this happens and helps us solving it ?

Thank you very much !!

I'm a little disappointed that someone here with a CZ 50 or a CZ 70 hasn't offered some suggestions.  I've never been inside either pistol, so I may be totally wrong.  Take my words for what they are.

I've owned three pistols with variations on the same firing pin block, decocking mechanism, and safety lever operation, the CZ 52, the Makarov IJ-70, and the Walter PP.  The firing pin block feature can fail on this design because of wear on the firing pin.  All three designs rely on a firing pin block interfering with the forward motion of the firing pin unless the trigger bar raises the block out of the way.  Have your gunsmith check the firing pin for wear, and check the firing pin block for correct operation.  The firing pin block may be jammed in the upward position, allowing the firing pin to fly forward to strike the cartridge's primer.  Or, the firing pin block may have been removed altogether.  You can see the exploded view of the pistol at http://www.gunuts.com/images/202.gif; part 007 is the firing pin and part 009 is the firing pin block.  If the firing pin is worn in a way that allows the firing pin to slip past as the safety lever trips the sear, the firing pin strike the primer and fire the round.

If you're not trained in firearm repair, take the pistol to a gunsmith for repair.  The CZ 70 is a simple pistol, and experienced gunsmiths who have never seen one, but have seen pistols designed with similar principles, will understand it and be able to repair it with proper parts.  You should have an easy time getting it repaired to operate safely.

Out of curiosity, where are you?  Your English is nearly flawless.  I know from studying several languages (and mastering none) just how hard it is to learn another language.  You're doing well.  Keep up the good work.

Greece. Thank you for your kind words..
Many , Many thanks for the your suggestions.
One last question. Do you believe that replacing the parts 007-008-009 and maybe 016-017-018
will cure the problem ?

I'm not a gunsmith, and I have never actually seen your pistol to know which parts are worn and which are not.  I'm just a hard-working test engineer.  Please take your pistol to a gunsmith and have it looked at by a professional.  It is possible that replacing any number of parts might fix your pistol, but it is also very possible that you will replace several good parts which are not worn along with the one part that is worn.  Have a gunsmith look at your pistol.

Sorry for resurrecting a very old thread, checking to see if anyone else has experienced this behavior.   Late last year I picked up a surplus CZ-70 where I am experiencing the same issue.   With hammer back,  about one out of three tries when moving to safe position, firearm will discharge.  I have confined it is not just decocking as the CZ-70 fires at the range when this happens.

not an expert at all, but sounds like worn out parts, worn sear or something in the mechanism needs replacement.
