The competition shooting market has always been a niche but profitable (high yield) market. We're now seeing increasing numbers of major manufactures producing competition-ready pistols for different IPSC/USPSA divisions (and IDPA in the US).
Interestingly, I do recall Tanfoglio already being well-represented in that market segment back in the days before anyone really saw that many CZs.
According to Wikipedia (take it for what its worth), the first CZUB team was started in 1992. Although it seems CZ really got serious starting in 1998 (with the ST), then 2005 (with the TS, and SP-01), and later 2009 (the Czechmate). Of course this would lead to the SP-01 Shadow and then the Shadow 2.
Given the relative popularity of Tanfos in ISPC (especially in Europe) at the time, it's not surprising that CZ (a larger company with more resources who actually designed the platform) would want a piece of that market as well.
