P09 project

I have a P09, fully Cajunized.  Also a Shadow 2 with the works as well. I shoot USPSA, Steel Challenge, and local knockdown matches.  i also have a Holosun 507C on a Neumount on the P09. Thinking about taking it farther and making an open fun gun out of it.  Nothing serious for USPSA open major, just for knockdown matches where anything goes, and SC matches in open.  Plus I just like to work on stuff.   How effective is the Primary Machine comp at minor levels?  I'd love to get this lightweight gun closer to the S2 in feel.  An SAO conversion is also in the plan.  So what do you guys think,  go for it or save the $$ toward a real open gun or a base to build one.  Will do that eventually anyway.  Thanks.

Combination of light recoil on the 9MM and that many people report the comps are more beneficial with "hot" loads might result in more cost than benefit.

If you already have a threaded barrel model then I'd say give the comp a shot, I run a comp on my p09 and p10 and I ran a comp on my p07 when I had one.
The smaller the gun the more I noticed a difference with a comp, there is a difference with the p09 but not nearly enough to spend 300 bucks on a new barrel and compensator

Well I completed the project and it turned out great.  The SAO conversion took a bit of work but has only 2-3mm take up and no overtravel.  The PM barrel and comp make the gun shoot accurate and flat.  I tested some loads tonight with 5.6-5.8g Power Pistol under 125g Precision coated bullets.  I could group 3-4" offhand at 25 yards,  and rapid fire the dot recenters perfect.  I also made a set of removable rail mount muzzle weights, the 4oz working perfectly with the comp.  Super fun to shoot, can't wait for next steel match to run it.

I removed the front block, fit a cross pin in the well of the frame, and notched the lower front edge of the block to perfectly capture it.  The the mating edge of the trigger was fit for perfect reset.  Also added overtravel stop.  The stock trigger pin was sloppy, seems like the relief for the spring was too wide and the right ear of the trigger would fall into the gap giving an inconsistent  feel.  I made a new pin from drill rod and captured it with 6mm long roll pins on each side.  Much better.

Thank you for the details GMP, interesting stuff. What are the "6mm long roll oins" that you mention? While i recognize that not everyone is into posting pictures, if you ever get the urge to post some entailing your conversion i would look at them.  I have heard very little about CZ P Series SAO conversions.

Yes, 6mm long roll pins, 3mm dia.  I fat fingered my phone!  The hardened rod is #32 drill dia. and cut to 15mm long. 

There are no SAO conversions commercially available due to liability reasons relating to the removable safety(to install decocker).  I really like the gun like this.  Without the DA to worry about, I run a #18 hammer spring, heavy CGW sear spring, and the SA release is crisp and light.  The Omega trigger SA gets more spongy and vague with light hammer springs. Only 2-3mm trigger take up remains.  I think that can be eliminated with a longer trigger bar.  You would have to measure, cut, and Tig weld back together the required distance longer.  Then fit the FP block lifter for fine adjustment.  When I find a precision welder I'll try it.

I have to do some more load testing but the PM barrel seems to prefer slightly higher than minor velocity,  which is fine as the comp works well in that range and the way the gun is balanced with the muzzle weight and recoil spring, the dot returns perfectly centered.  With my USPSA minor loads I could probably drop the recoil spring to a #13 for better balance.  Now all I need is a magwell, and possibly a thumb rest as I can fit one to the side of the weight.
