9mm FMJ FN for self defense
« on: December 31, 2019, 10:30:07 AM »
hi
I read everywhere that HP ammunition is best for self-defense. Unfortunately, the law in my country prohibits HP ammunition for the use of individuals for self-defense purposes. Instead, FMJ flat nose ammunition exists on the market and I would be curious to know if you have performed comparative tests between FMJ, FMJFN and HP. Due to the larger mass and flat nose profile, I tend to believe that it does not have as much penetration as FMJ but does not have the expansion of an HP. I'm curious to find out your opinion

More knowledgeable people will chime in after me, but, as I understand it, certain competitors prefer to use flat nose projectiles for shooting steel plates because they apparently transfer the energy better to a steel plate (FN bullets knock down steel plates more effectively).

It seems that hollow points are preferred for self defense because they limit overpenetration while simultaneously increasing the diameter of the wound cavity, thereby limiting collateral liability and performing better on an unarmored assailant.

Considering that:

1) energy and penetration combine to determine the degree of terminal effects,

2) cavitation has a greater terminal effect than the actual wound channel,

3) and considering that you're forced to use a non Hollow Point projectile,

I would say that, unless you're preparing for armored targets, over penetration is your largest concern. I expect the data to support the use of heavier projectiles. If FP projectiles transfer energy faster, it stands to reason that they are less prone to over penetration.

So I'd think that a FP is better, but I'd want to use 147gr and up projectiles (if limited to 9mm) as long as I know my gun will run them.

Unless you are preparing to engage targets at extended ranges, I would expect that the twist rate of your barrel is irrelevant for this purpose.

Crawl explained it quite good.

Due to your local law limitation, I would go with FMJ-FN 147gr for self-defense.
FMJ (round tip) travels thru tissue, pushes organs out of the way, making nice hole.
FMJ-FN crushes and tears tissue, creates a larger non sealing hole, creating more damage and blood loss, what ends the fight earlier.

An additional option is to use the solid copper bullets made by Lehigh Defense and available as full-up rounds from Lehigh and Underwood.  They are also sold as bullets (for reloading).  Initial reviews going back a couple of years indicate they are effective for self-defense.

Welcome Aboard !

It's OK to put your general location in your profile. Only members can see it.

I'm no expert, I only play one on TV, but the other guys have a persuasive argument and possibly hit the nail on the head. Heavy bullet moving slow with the broadest ojive possible.

I'm fairly sure if you can't buy it already, then you certainly can't import it either.

Wouldn't you see greater penetration using solid copper?

You didn't say what brand/model of pistol you are using.

All of my CZ's are particularly fond of 115 grain bullets.

I have a S&W 9MM that could care less about the ammo that shoots so well in the CZ's.  It happens to do best with the Winchester 124 grain FMJ NATO ammo.

147 grain bullets don't do as well in any of those pistols vs. the brands/weights I mentioned.  Now, I've only shot 147 grain Winchester hollow points and several brands, types of 147 grain bullets in my own reloads.

What is your pistol reliable with?  What does it shoot good groups with?  What can you easily buy where you live?
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

First of all , Happy new year!
Thank you all for your answers.
I live in Romania, and here are some law limitations for fire arms. Also, regarding the ammunition are restrictions. But some of us can carry hand guns for self defense. I personally use a CZ P07 9mm gen.II and i found it very ok for what i need. I do not expect attackers to wear armor or be required to shoot at a distance greater than 10-15 m. Any greater distance would be difficult to prove as being in self-defense.
I cannot order ammunition as a private person directly in the US .I have to buy only from local distributors. The ammunition that is sold in the area is Sellier&Bellot or Geco. I trust Sellier&Bellot but they have two types of ammunition FN: 140 and 150 grn. I tend to go on 140grn because of the weapon I use
