If it weren't for all us "boomers" there wouldn't be so many of these young know-it-alls running around today. Even boomers know kids are brought by storks, or found in cabbage patches.
I've been using Hoppe's #9 since about 1969 when my dad bought me a slightly used Ithaca M37 to hunt sharptails, rabbits and Hungarian partridge with in ND. Works great.
While/when shooting corrosive surplus ammo (S&B .308 and Russian 5.45X39) I use a black powder cleaner called Black Off first, then Hoppe's #9.
I have, occasionally on a really nasty/dirty gun, used carb. cleaner, or brake cleaner to blow out crud/cosmoline, etc. I let it dry once it's clean (may take spraying, brushing, scraping, spraying, brushing/scraping, wiping, several times if it's really bad) and then spray some kind of oily lube/surface protectant on it to keep it from rusting. The brake/carb cleaner really strip it down to bare metal and some parts may rust in a few hours if not protected. Most of that stuff isn't really a good lube though, so I still put some lube oil on the parts that need it after spraying it till it's good and clean.
