New CZ 75 Compact Owner
« on: March 16, 2020, 06:02:12 PM »
Hello all,

I have recently purchased my first semiautomatic pistol - the CZ 75 Compact. All of my friends told me to get a Glock however I held one of the CZ’s in the store and had to have it. I only have 100 rounds through it thus far however I am very pleased with my purchase. Something drew me to the all steel construction.

I an posting because I proceeded to give the gun it’s initial cleaning and cleaning after shooting it for the first time without reading the owners manual. I am now concerned because, contrary to the recommendation in the owners manual, I used a solvent (hoppes no 9) on a cleaning patch over the entire gun. Afterwards I wiped it all dry and coated all surfaces with remoil.

Are there any steps I should take to ensure that corrosion does not begin? Or is it standard practice to use a cleaner such as hoppes on the whole gun?

I’m planning for this to be my everyday carry so I would appreciate any insight you guys may have or any general guncare tips.

Hopefully my fears are not warranted.

Thank you in advance!

hey Cz75COMPACT.
Congrats ! You've picked up almost perfect handgun... almost because P-01 is a little bit better  ;)

Few tips:
1. do not bother with owner's manual. This book has been written because it's required by the Law...
2. Hoppie's 9 and REM are OK for now... eventually you will find your best solvent and lubricant. Search this forum (top right corner) for cleaning / lube threads.
3. For corrosion - shoot, clean and lube... no better protection. You will need to protect the firearm if not used over month...
4. as the beginner, try to learn as much as you can now, when your gun interest is on maximum level. Do field strip every time you come back form the Range, eventually you become "The Master"
5. For everyday firearm care... just spend sometime on YouTube. Watch a lot, read a lot and find you own procedure. Pay attention to tips people are giving on these videos, remember what can be done or what cannot be done at all (fe. don't pour solvent or lube into firing pin channel)... You will learn a lot  ::)

Follow this forum, ask the questions... we are all here to help each other.

Good luck !!!

Congratulations on your purchase.
Never let someone talk you into ANY gun.  What feels good to you and shoots well for you, might not for someone else.

As to cleaning, I wouldn't be too worried, because I seriously doubt you had any bare metal, where the finish has rubbed off.  Simple green, mineral spirits or even Hoppe's (in cases where a bunch of ammo dirties up the front of the pistol sights), can be used.  Generally I would tell someone new, to look at Youtube for their specific pistol and find a cleaning/lubrication video, then go from there.

Where one most worries about solvents, is the sights (paint, glue for night sights, etc).
Welcome aboard.

I clean my bore as well as the entire gun with Hoppes and then rinse that with CRC electronic cleaner (half the price of Gun Scrubber and plastic safe as well). When that is completely dry I lube the internals and oil the gun down. Done it this way for over 30 years and my guns are not corroded in any way.

Thank you so much for the responses, I feel a lot better. I am really making a concerted effort to do everything correctly. Just to be sure I took it apart again and wiped everything down and re oiled. I see a lot of conflicting info regarding oil vs grease on the rails so I have been making a little mixture of remoil and some standard white lithium grease. Seems to be working well.

I’m so glad I didn’t let anyone talk me into a glock or a S&W. My friends are calling me a “boomer” but that’s ok..this gun works for me and it feels right. On the plus side I enjoy the historical aspect of it.

100 more rounds to go through it sometime this week and I can’t wait!

You didn't ask about "glock or S&W"  ;) ;D 8) :P
Just kidding... every handgun has the same cleaning and lubing procedure.
And there is nothing wrong to be a "boomer"  ;D  Just shoot what you like to shoot. Eventually every firearm does the same when you pull the trigger.

If it weren't for all us "boomers" there wouldn't be so many of these young know-it-alls running around today.  Even boomers know kids are brought by storks, or found in cabbage patches.

I've been using Hoppe's #9 since about 1969 when my dad bought me a slightly used Ithaca M37 to hunt sharptails, rabbits and Hungarian partridge with in ND.  Works great.

While/when shooting corrosive surplus ammo (S&B .308 and Russian 5.45X39) I use a black powder cleaner called Black Off first, then Hoppe's #9.

I have, occasionally on a really nasty/dirty gun, used carb. cleaner, or brake cleaner to blow out crud/cosmoline, etc.  I let it dry once it's clean (may take spraying, brushing, scraping, spraying, brushing/scraping, wiping, several times if it's really bad) and then spray some kind of oily lube/surface protectant on it to keep it from rusting.  The brake/carb cleaner really strip it down to bare metal and some parts may rust in a few hours if not protected.  Most of that stuff isn't really a good lube though, so I still put some lube oil on the parts that need it after spraying it till it's good and clean.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

CZ 75 compact was my very first firearm as well. I had it little over a year and no malfunction of any kind whatsoever. I'm no expert, but I've been using CLP and/or Ballistol for cleaning and slip 2000 EWL for lube. You will like it even more once you Cajunize it with Cajun Gun Works Pro Package.  ;D

People my age just don’t understand why I would want something so “old” as they call it. Jokes on them because nobody’s touching this thing!

I always tended to get along better with the “boomers” anyhow  ;D

Try these people with Classic 1911 .. If they still make the jokes... you just know they have no any idea about the firearms.
I personally call them "plastic guys"  ;) .. no offence to polymer handguns... which I also own.

Awesome job!  It took me well over 15 years of just nice to so so handgun acquisitions before I finally brought some CZs and 1911s home!  Laugh at your friends when in not too long, your groups at 15 yards become smaller than theirs at 5 yards!  124gr ammo is the key; hope you got some before this recent hysteria.
