Flash hider length for pin/weld on 14" barrel?
« on: May 01, 2020, 11:48:39 PM »
Hello everyone.

I ordered a Bren 2 Ms and am planning to pin/weld a muzzle device to the barrel so I can make it a rifle.  I don't like the look of the carbine to be honest, and much prefer the look of the pistol variant with the shorter gas system.  Don't want to be hassled with SBR'ing it either.  So I decided to get the 14" model and have a muzzle device pinned and welded to the barrel.

My question is, what length muzzle device do I need to get the barrel over 16?  I looked at a few that are 2.6" and figure that should be enough, but if need be I can put an Ultradyne on it which is 2.9" long and should be more than enough.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Just some random advice, but advertised barrel length is not always what the real barrel length is. Even here in the USA. There was a great thread on it at M4Carbine.net a few years ago.

I have no knowledge of the 14" Bren 2 barrel, but I would recommend you get a thin rod and lower it down through the barrel with no muzzle device attached until it rests on the closed bolt face. This is how the ATF measures barrels and in other countries sometimes they use different methods, on top of just rounding numbers.

Better to be sure, than be Bubba's boyfriend.

Thank you!  I actually planned on doing this before I send the barrel in to a gunsmith to be pinned and welded.  I was thinking of even getting a timing nut to add some length if I need it.

Probably doesn't matter unless you live in CA or one of the other restrictive states but, on top of barrel length flash hiders are a no no.
