Win 231 reloading data for Precision Delta FMJ
« on: June 04, 2020, 04:14:42 PM »
I ordered PD 124gr FMJ bullets in addition to plated Berry's which I already have.
Surprisingly I can't found any official Win 231 load data for FMJ. Should I consider same loads as for the plated bullets (i.e - 3.9 - 4.4 max).

P.S. My local outdoor range is opening next week, so I plan to make my first reloads on weekend and test them :)

No, they will differ slightly. The FMJ is a much harder material than the plated.

The copper on FMJ is going to be the same hardness as JHP, CMJ, and many others. W231 has to be the best documented powder of all time. Go back and look again.

I tried different sources starting from Lee Reloading manual and information on Winchester site: https://wwpowder.com/231/

Both contain information only for 124gr plated bullets, so I'd appreciate if anyone can share data for FMJ.

So far I was able to find Win 231 data for 125gr FMJ:

https://www.powderthrough.com/data/caliber.load_details/575/

Do you think I can neglect 1gr difference (1/125 = 0.8%)?

Speer has data for 124gr TMJ RN. Its similar to FMJ by construction. Their tested range for W231 is 4.0-4.5gr

124gr or 125gr bullet weight will not make a difference, but start from the min load.

I use 4.5 hp38 (same as win 231) with the precision delta 124 hp and get a little over 1100 fps as my go to for bad times ammo.

You can absolutely disregard the difference. Many brands of bullets have that much variance in a lot.
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.
