Finally, a problem with my P-09
« on: July 23, 2020, 04:06:43 PM »
After close to 20k rounds through my original P-09, I had a problem today.  I was hoping to compare some IMI 9mm 115 JHP to my usual AA 115 gr JHP at 100 yards, using the red dot equipped absolutely perfect shooting precision match pistol.  First 30 rounds looked fair, but with more horizontal spread than I expected.  Next 20 were off the paper.  I looked at the Springer Precision dovetail mount holding my original Burris Fast Fire 3 3moa red dot, and it had shifted a quarter inch to the left in the slide dovetail!  I packed up and went home, removed the sight, loosened the set screws, tapped the mount back in, blue loctite on all the screws and put it all back together.

What did I learn?  Stuff loosens up over time, even with a little blue loctite on the tiny screws.  I think I'll go check my 97 while I'm thinking about it, even though it was perfect last time out.

I probably bumped the dovetail mount either carrying the gun around or when I was cleaning it last, or I bumped it with a tripod or camera while it was in the soft case.  I'll have to zero it again.  For the first time in a LONG time.  I know, I know, a slide cut would take care of this once and for all.  The P-10's have spoiled me.

One other thing I learned today.  I actually prefer the P-10 striker trigger pull (after CGW parts and some polishing) to the P-09/07 trigger pull (after CGW parts).  The reach is noticeably shorter on the P-09 in single action compared to the P-10, and I like the P-10 finger pressure versus trigger travel curve more.  Personal preference, not for everyone.

I guess I'll have to return to the range on Friday morning and zero that pistol again, and maybe repeat my 100 yard test.

The short SA reach on the P-09 is a challenge for me, i am trying out one of the CZC straight triggers to see if it helps. I am going to have it milled to counter some of the angle at SA release. We will see how it goes.

Here is a reference pic of the CZC trigger before SA release.

Glad that you caught that sight moving sooner than later.
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

There were 3 other folks at the rifle range today (all 6 feet away!).  They would have had a good laugh if the red dot had just fallen off while I was shooting a pistol at 100 yards.  They already thought I was a little strange expecting to shoot well at 100 yards.   I managed to leave without explaining why I had taken 50 shots but could only find 44 holes in my targets.

After I got home, I saw that my new-to-me (used and cheap) Canon R800 shooter camera worked perfectly but I had zoomed in too tight on the target to see the berm impacts drift off to the right on the last 10 rounds as the mount walked out of the dovetail.

Not a P09 issue.  An aftermarket part issue.

You had me worried for a bit.  I thought something broke, or came loose.

Though I may never get 20,000 rounds through my P09 I still was wondering.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Actually, an aftermarket part INSTALLER (me) issue.  I let it go too long without checking to see if everything was still good to go.  That's what happens when one NEVER has an issue with a pistol for like 7 years.  I got careless.

Joe -
This is clearly abuse, bordering on neglect. You're lucky I don't send the CZ Police around to confiscate your P09 ! As it is, Armoredman will be around to do a home inspection.

Keep in mind, there are laws protecting video and movie stars !!

I normally don't go to the range on Saturday morning, but I made an exception today, as rain is in the forecast for the next few days.  I got there as the gate was opened, rushed to the rifle range, set up at 100 yards and then moved to the 25 to re-zero the P-09 after reinstalling the dovetail adapter and Burris red dot.  Took 3 shots, made two adjustments, called it good.  Still a little left and a little low at 25 but within 2" of aim point.  People waiting to use the 25.  Went back to 100, fired off 5 rounds as if the zero was good, hits off to the left.  Changed hold point to right edge of aim point bullseye and fired off these five shots.  Changed hold further right and down and fired off 5 more that I could see with the spotting scope.   Close enough.  Cleaned up my mess, waited until the next cease fire, collected my target and aim point, finally saw the good group, and went home, confident that the P-09, small pits and all, is STILL the most accurate firearm I own.

Full disclosure.  This 2" group is a fluke, in my opinion, as a normal group size with this pistol is in the 4"-6" range on an average day.  I did not take the time to set up a video camcorder and I couldn't see the holes in the black with a dark berm behind with the spotting scope.  When I got home, I made a 4 click right, 2 click up correction to the scope to that I could hold center of aim point next trip.  I really need to see if the gun and I are good for sub 3" groups at 100 yards now!  If so, great.  If not, well, I have good days and I have bad days.

I'm also very interested in confirming that the IMI ammo is consistent, just like the Atlanta Arms ammo I've been using for years.

I think this slide may be getting a slide cut mill job.

That's awesome Joe.  You know, I'm kind of starting to like the striker fired feel myself.
I hate to admit it, but I bought a S&W M&P 9 Shield a few months back because I wanted a single stack pistol that was easier to conceal in Summer clothing.  I bought the Shield because PSA had a great deal going.

After some smoothing of the sear and a little polishing in a few other places, that little gun shoots really nice.  I can hit my 50 yard steel silhouette 4 out of 5 times, off hand on a good day.  If I've had anything with caffeine in it, I get a little more jerky, but the gun shoots really well for such a small piece.

I felt guilty not buying another CZ, but I wanted a single stack.

But, I do love my P-09 and am very fond of my P-07s.

Joe, a milled slide & red dot.

Your video's helped inspire me to buy first P09 (which is a darned good shooting pistol, too).

Here's a picture of it with it's slide milled and a DI RMR on it (DI probably wouldn't be a good choice for a target shooting pistol, but I never have to worry about batteries, switches, electronics, etc.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I think your P09 deserves it.  After all, she''s a movie star !
