Most accurate 7.62x39mm ammo VZ58
« on: August 04, 2021, 09:35:06 AM »
The most accurate 7.62x39mm ammo on the market is, in my opinion:

Lapua-123 grain, .311” FMJ bullet, Lapua Brass
Underwood-123 grain, .311” Controlled Chaos/Lehigh Defense bullet, Starline Brass
Fort Scott Munitions-117 grain, .310” SCS bullet, PPU Brass

I would like to try:

Custom Cartridge Inc. manufacturers several 7.62x39mm handloads costing anywhere from $40-$84 per 20 round box.

Doubletap Ammunition makes three different 7.62x39mm loads that range in price from $41-$60 per 20 round box. They have been sold out so I have not been able to test them.

Defiant Munitions makes a 124 grain load with Lapua brass and sells it for $50 per 20 round box. Definitely next on my list.

Depends on what your rifle shoots best.

One rifle can do very well with ammo a different rifle doesn't like for beans.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Hornady SST Steel, Golden Tiger, and Wolf Military/Barnaul all shoot well for me in the Vz58/2008 -- since that's the forum this thread started.

Pretty sure there's existing threads on this.

*I was unaware of Lehigh and Ft Scott offerings.

Here's Ft Scott's vid since I spent time searching...

FWIW, I don't see much difference between wound tracks of Golden Tiger and Ft Scott:

The best ammo I ever used in the vz-58 was my own handloads. I could get minute of man at 200 yards with factory ammo, but nothing stood out as really good.

The rifle contributes a great deal to the accuracy.  I've been shooting all flavors of Wolf and Golden Tiger through VZ2008's and SKS's for years and with iron sights can usually get less than 1" groups at 50 yards and about 3-4" at 100.  That's also what I get using an AR15 with irons.  I just got a Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39 and with a 2-7 shotgun scope I get same-hole groups at 50 yards, 1 to 1 1/2" at 100 yards, and can ring a gong at 300 yards all day long -- with the same Wolf and Golden Tiger.

Yes, the scope helps, even at just 2-7 power, but there is something sweet about a factory rifle that can shoot cheap, Russian steel case at 1 MOA with ease.  That commie ammo gets a bad rap.
