Best powders for 7.62x39 and 123gr jacketed
« on: November 13, 2020, 10:22:16 AM »
Started reloading 7.62x39 with jacketed .310 bullets and just wondering what others have had luck using.

Tried out an inherited can of IMR 4227 and had very clean and fairly accurate results with that. Also saw 2400 is on the list. Note that both these powders are listed for use in 357 Mag and other big handguns.

In my research also noted that IMR 3031 (one of the universal powders that does well in 223) was very close to that on the burn rate, but several sources have poo-pooed that idea. Shame because I have several cans sitting on the shelf and nothing else to shoot it in.

I see IMR 4198 is also on the list, and that has been a perennial favorite in 223. I will get around to that... when I can buy it again.

This is indeed a very strange cartridge. I think it's the duality of the cartridge I can't wrap my head around. Is it a long barreled magnum handgun, or a very short bottleneck rifle ? I can understand using shotgun powder in pistols, but this magnum pistol in a bottleneck rifle situation is new and somewhat perplexing.

Obviously, I'm rambling. Rambling replies are welcome.  ;D

Not a 7.62X39 reloader but some of the powders work well in it and .300 BO.  I've only used Hornaday 150 grain FMJBT bullets.  Loaded supersonic, not subsonic.

And, contributing/causing? the function issues may be the carbine length gas system vs. a pistol length gas system (with some of the faster burning powders.)

I've tried these in .300 BO

AA1680 - 100% function and better accuracy than the others (but still not great).
H110 - by the time I get enough gas port pressure to get it to stop short stroking I'm popping holes in the primers.
IMR4198 - can't get enough powder in it to operate the carbine.
AA2230 - can't get enough powder in it to operate the carbine.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Good thought. 300 BO is a very similar cartridge.

Thanks.

Shooters world blackout works well in 7.62x39.  It is pretty similar to AA1680

I did almost everything with AA 1680. I had just started with CFE BLK when things stopped. Now an almost full pound of powder stares me every night....
