Help id load data for this Hornady 45acp bullet?
« on: November 23, 2020, 07:35:07 PM »
Figured I'd ask here while scouring the internet for more info. I got these as part of a lot, pretty sure the label is correct. My only (old) Hornady book doesn't list this particular bullet.

Anyone here know what bullet # and/or have load data for it?

I'm guessing 4.8-5.0gr of Bullseye would be fine, but I'd rather not guess...

Old ! Hornady has changed this bullet to the fmj 185gr. You could use the starting load for the new bullet for this one and work up. It's intended for target shooting at lower speeds than the jhp stye of bullets. I hope this helps.

My 3rd Ed says 4.2 to 6.5gr of Bullseye for jacketed 185gr.

Sweet, thanks! I have the 4th Ed... can I trouble you for the listed COL? Or maybe a pic of the load data page?

The reference is to Hornady bullet #4510. Their reported OAL was 1.230", but OAL is not so critical in the 45ACP due to the lower pressures. That being the case, you should determine your own gun's optimal OAL.

I've always found that about the time everything is working great, I run out of bullets. Small lots of bullets can be fun loading practice, but it's a lot of work that ends up as a dead end street.

Yeah like I said, just looking to load these up for cheap blasting fun as they were nearly free, and obviously I can't buy more of them.

Thank you for the info. I bought a mixed lot of reloading supplies from a random person I met in a gun shop. He was cleaning house getting ready for a move out of state. Got a bunch of die sets and a plastic organizer full of random bullets. Pretty much everything he had was from the mid 60s through early 80s. They don't make tools like they used to, but the bullets have come a ways for sure... I got a few boxes of Hornady and Nosler 38 caliber bullets in 140 and 158 grain too, just loaded the 140 HP's tonight.

Lemme try the pic thing again...

• Do be careful with bullets from the 60's. I seem to remember that some of the soft-nose HP (like what you show) were bad to leave their jackets in the barrel. The follow-up shot would then damage the gun. ReloaderFred could tell us some details.

• Yes, the dies you could buy in the 60's and 70's were really something. Congrats.

• The "pic thing" turned out great. You only need to limit the Width. Open the post back up with the "Modify" command and see how I did it. It's a simple insertion of the Width command. A number between 400 & 600 gives good results.

Congrats on the buy !!

Well forgive me for being new, but you'll have to be more specific. Are you saying I shouldn't even load them?

"were bad to leave"... were known to leave?

Please forgive me.

It's more than 5 years, but I remember reading reputable reports that some loads with soft nose HP would launch the core and then leave the jacket in the barrel. I can't remember details of whether it was a hot load or a soft load, that's not the way my brain works. I remember a "flag", then research the details when needed.

I know this to be true because there is corroborating evidence in some older load manuals.
