Zeroing my scorpion with a Holosun 510c
« on: July 17, 2020, 08:12:29 PM »
Took the scorp out to the range today for the first time with my 510c. At 6 yards it was shooting roughly 3 inches low and 1 inch left. Had another shooter try it and he had the identical pattern. Adjusted it until it was perfect. However, now when I took it out further above 12 ish yards it was shooting high and right from over adjusting. Did some more tweaking until I had it at about 12ish yards for my zero. My vision is bad enough that I can't see past about that spot, but I know I was shooting high at 25 yards. Given that I only shoot in indoor ranges that are a maximum of 30 yards, where would you suggest I zero? I honestly can't even see past about 15 yards unless I am using splatter targets. Are those of you who zero at 25 yards just aiming noticeably higher at close range?

For starters - are you co-witnessing off of iron sights?

And if so, are your iron sights dialed in at a particular distance?

I have a Vortex SPARC on my Scorpion pistol. I have the zero for 115 gr ammo set at 15 yards. That is about the distance to the berm at my local range (for shooting clay pigeons).
I don't look like my avatar!

Thanks for the reply. Just as a preface, I know nothing about any of this and this is my first optic and non handgun purchase. I don't believe I can co witness because the holosun 510c rides too high.

The iron sights would be whatever distance came from the factory.

Not sure about the windage stuff based on the info, but keep in mind that when you're adjusting for elevation the sights sit a good bit above the bore of the barrel. So if you zero at 6 yards, the reason it's high at twelve yards is because of the direction of the bullet verse the direction you're looking. So if you went even further in distance, like 150 yards, the impact may be low now. I googled for some imagery and will post something below for reference. With that I personally have my Evo zeroed so that at 20 yards I am hitting about 1/2in low. I have not had this particular setup very long, so I may tweak it a bit in the very near future. I hope I am answering what you're inquiring.

I switched out the factory CZ sights with standard MBUS pop ups, and they look like they will co witness very nicely with the HS510c, although I just got the gun a few days ago and need a clear day to get to the range to be sure.  Moved the CZ sights to a CAA stock I just got, and the red dot on that has a see through base, so they work perfectly with that setup.

Where you zero is completely personal preference.  I would base it on the normal distance you expect to use the gun.  I always zero at a minimum of 25 yards, just because that is what I'm used to doing with all of my carbines.  If you're using it as a 'house' gun, I may consider a 5 to 15 yard zero, depending on the size of your rooms.

When I zeroed my Scorpion with the 510, I used a 25 yard zero.  The next time I took it to the range I shot it from 100 yards and found that the rounds were right on target.  I recommend using a 25 yard zero.  The bullet will impact only slightly lower at closer distances.

Caveat:  Haven't been to the range yet but.....

I've zeroed my 510 at about 15 yards in the house (it's 30 below with the windchill here this week).  I used my laser cartridge.  I figure that should work for use at any distance in terms of being "accurate enough".  I mean, sure, at 100 yds I'd expect the bullet to drop a bit, but for defensive purposes I think it'll be good enough for proverbial government work.
