P10S owners - Anyone use Hornady Critical Duty?
« on: March 23, 2021, 11:54:23 PM »

Does anyone use any of the Critical Duty variants on their P10s?

Due to ammo shortage spilling over internationally, Critical Defense is selling at around $1.85 per round after tax. I am wondering if I can use Critical Dutys, which sell for $1.44, which only around 10 cents more than retail.

I am especially worried about using +P on the smaller P10S.

TIA!

The manufacturer answer is to use +p sparingly. That being said, I carry CD in everything I carry.

I have CD in a couple of my defensive pistols with no issue. +P won't hurt the gun unless you shot high volumes of it and I doubt you'll be doing that with high dollar defensive rounds.

I don't think you will see much degradation in accuracy at self defense distances.

I have very limited experience with self defense loads in 3.5" barrel pistols but I will share what I have observed in my own P-10S.  I have a few boxes of IMI 115 JHP ammo but I normally shoot a very soft minimum power factor Atlanta Arms (AA) 115 JHP ammo.  The AA round shoots fine in the P-10S out to 100 yards with very small groups at 25.  The IMI is excellent in the 4.5" barrel pistols but the groups widen up even at 25 yards in the P-10S 3.5" barrel pistol.  By "widen up" I mean 2" instead of 1"from a wrist rest.  At 100 yards the groups are 8-12" instead of 4-6" for the AA in the P-10S.  I expect your CD rounds to be loaded hotter than the IMI and I expect the group size to be even larger than for the IMI, unless the powder burns much faster than what is used in the IMI, which would compensate for more powder in a short barrel.  Perhaps try 5 rounds at 5-20 yards and see for yourself.  I bet the CD is fine in your P-10S for anything except a bullseye match.

The IMI ammo is excellent if you come across some.  It is a pretty good substitute for the unpbtainable AA 115 JHP right now.

It’s pretty much all I carry in my p10s. I have only put 2 boxes through it to verify function. Ran fine...I won’t be putting a ton of +p stuff through it but even if you were to do so, I doubt anything would happen. CZ makes some of the beefiest barrels out there.

Thanks Para. Hornady's own documentation states the Dutys are not designed for short barrels but its good to hear you've done 2 boxes worth through it.
