Its not just ammo that goes through periods of crisis. Some of you may remember the so-called assault weapons ban ("assault weapon" being defined by federal statute as any rifle that looks scary). Standard capacity magazines (anything over 10 rounds) were made illegal, and took on the value of gold bullion. Used Glock mags were $100+. You gotta be a certain age to remember this. Eventually things returned to normal when the political winds shifted. And then everyone forgets about it. Everyone except me, that is.
So over the past many years, whenever I saw anything on the "news" that makes me grumpy (which I no longer watch btw), I would get my "revenge" by buying a few Glock mags or a case of ammo. Or another gun. A little here and a little there, and it really adds up over time. If one has 30,000 rounds on hand and 50 NIB Glock mags (not saying I do, of course) it tends to take a little of the sting out of a short-term ammo shortage. You are in a position to sell or give or hunker down, instead of being one of those poor suckers who stands in line for 2 hours at Academy only to get nothing. Its a scary prospect to think about having a gun and no ammo.
Speaking of which, I bought a Ruger LCP Max at Academy two days ago. They offered me some overpriced .380 HP ammo to go with it, which I declined. The LCP Max cycles 100% on Underwood Xtreme Penetrators, which I just happen to have plenty of. And lots of .380 FMJ.
So when things return to normal some day, remember to start buying a little here and a little there. When the next contrived "crisis" invariably hits, you'll be sitting pretty.
