HK model 502
« on: April 19, 2021, 04:12:37 AM »
I bought this HK model 502 shotgun. I don’t know much about it except what I heard from the LGS (rare, mainly delivered to police forces) and the little info I found on the internet

Is anyone familiar with this weapon ? There is also contradictory info whether it can shoot slugs

“Only buckshot can be fired due to the muzzle device that shapes the shot horizontally in an oval pattern”

“An unusual feature of the HK 512 shotgun was special shot diverter, mounted on the barrel of the gun. It was a sort of muzzle device, intended to create oval, rather than round shot patterns. Depending on the tactical situation on hand, this shot diverter could be set (rotated) for horizontal or vertical dispersion. It also allows use of most types of standard 12 gauge slugs.”

Very interesting.  :o
This HK shotgun produced in Italy is completely unknown in Germany.
In addition, this semi-automatic shotgun with a seven-shot magazine may not be sold to private gun owners in Germany.

From the website I quoted :

The HK 512 is a semi-automatic shotgun of Italian origin. It was developed and produced by Franchi at the request of Heckler & Koch, which took care of marketing and sales. The HK 512 was one of the first semi-automatic shotguns developed for law enforcement use. The mechanism was later employed in the very successful Super 90 series developed by Benelli.

LGS also told me that it was sold to law enforcement only. The previous owner of this one was working security at the United Nations.

GSG-9 (Grenzschutzgruppe 9) and KSK (Kommando Spezialkräfte) used them or the successor, the 512, so not totally unknown in Germany.

Update. HK sent me a pdf manual in German. It states that all conventional slugs can be used

I was a bit worried because after taking one apart it is clearly larger than the diverter exit

However the LGS whose 512 is pictured in this thread told me he fired slugs through it without problems, and the diverter is identical, except it’s mounted vertically on the 512

Now, the manufacturer’s manual states they can be used, and the LGS has actual experience shooting them.

So with a little apprehension I loaded just one round and fired. Indeed not problem so I fired a few more

Next time I’ll have to try some buckshots and see the pattern
