Timing issue? sort of "reverse DA"
« on: December 07, 2021, 11:02:19 AM »
I apologize should I be posting in the wrong section of this forum but I just joined and btw glad to be aboard.

I need some advice since I am experiencing an annoying issue with my CZ SP01.

In a nutshell  ... when slowly pulling the trigger in SA mode eventually (seldom) I can feel the sear break but the hammer is pushing the trigger forward and by the trigger movement I am able to lower the hammer like in a reverse DA mode.  My guess is that the hammer is still connected and pushing the trigger bar directly or indirectly somehow.

Recently I had a gunsmith fix another problem.  When inserting a fresh clip and slamming the slide the hammer fell and the gun accidentally discharged (several shots in auto fire).  The gunsmith had to rework the hammer a little and also the sear because the surface where they engaged was too small and the edge rounded.
I don't know whether that fix may have engendered the present issue but I suspect that it was there also prior to the fix, just I didn't notice it since the trigger was so light and I loved it.

Any advice that may point me toward a solution is certainly welcomed  and very much appreciated.

Thanks
Scud

Scud,

Welcome to the forum!

First let me tackle the hammer follow issue.  I'd highly recommend you have the parts replaced (hammer and sear).  If you get a competition hammer you will enjoy a crisp clean break that is light and SAFE.  Given the fact that there was worn parts causing the hammer follow and that the OEM parts are not fully hardened (case hardened).  Any further rework to the hammer/sear is not going to last and it will round again inducing an unsafe condition.

So how did the hammer follow happen?  Do you have a trigger with an overtravel setscrew?  If so, then you need to adjust it out so that the hammer hooks clear the sear when releasing in SA.  If not, then you gun does have a timing issue (maybe multiple).  I'm not sure the best route to address a SA timing issue if new parts don't address it.

Modifying the OEM disconnector or purchasing a new part will help solve the problem of the hammer catching the disconnector upon slow trigger pull (1st issue).  I'd guess that the timing was advanced when the hammer was reworked and it is causing the fall to DA issue.  I highly recommend a new hammer and sear.

I'd suggest a Type 2 disconnector, a competition hammer, a replacement sear, and a floating trigger pin from CGW.  If you wanted to go the full monty, you could just get the Pro kit.  You might still have to modify the timing but there are tutorials out there but it is easiest to just call CGW and describe your issue and he will walk you through the solution.

Cheers,
Toby

Thanks Toby,

I had regarded the rework job on the hammer and sear as a "kludge" and as plan B I was prepared to swap parts already.  So I have brand new OEM hammer and sear ready but I was hoping to keep on going for a while with the reworked parts since I am sure the trigger now is stll much much lighter if compared to the OEM parts.

Maybe I'll indulge in a competition hammer as a personal Christmas gift.  For the time being I have cleaned, sprayed with solvent,  dried with compressed air and oiled the whole gun.
Glad to report that at home with snap caps I haven't been able to replicate the issue  of the hammer pushing the trigger bar so far.
Must be a very very light interfierence of the trigger bar with some parts of the sear but I have yet to understand which parts and surface.  If somebody can advise which surface/part I may try to give it a polishing.  If bad come to worst I still have a new OEM sear ready for swap anyhow.

by altering sear and hammer hooks you made the SA release early.
now when you release the SA, the disconnector has a chance to catch the trigger bar.

So will need to advance the DA release if you keep the parts as is.
I would recommend changing out for a new factory sear and comp hammer from CZC or CGW.
