Is the Scorpion picky with ammo?
« on: September 05, 2021, 04:00:15 AM »

For those who've shot more ammo through their Scorpions, would you say the Scorpion is less picky with ammo than pistols?

I ask because ever since I got my ammo gauge I've been running all my ammo both reloads and brand new ones through it.

I noticed that the shorter the barrel was the pickier the gun was with ammo. My P10S did not like even some FMJ, my Shadow 1 didnt like some reloads though my 75B just ate everything up (Yes I know the last 2 have similar barrel lengths).

I passed a box of Magtech +P+ JHPs through the gauge (ammo I planned to use on the Scorpion, since I am warier of using +P+ ammo on my pistols) and some of them were kinda fractious getting in and out of the gauge freely. Now I have to go through everything...

It's not the length of the barrel that matters, it's the dimensions of the chamber and the inevitable variance between examples due to manufacturing tolerances. FWIW, my Scorpion Carbine ate everything I ever tried to put through it, even rounds that my CZ pistols rejected. That said, I didn't shoot much JHP through the Scorpion, but I did shoot a wide variety of coated lead bullets(.356 & .357) before I sold it. Probably the least ammo picky gun I've ever owned. Everything that didn't pass the gauge/pistol chamber check went into a pile for the Scorpion.

^^ This. ^^

Cartridge-to-barrel fit is different with every gun and every bullet shape and every bullet weight. That makes for a 3-dimensional matrix of possible variations. In other words, a truly infinite number of things that can go wrong.

Each cartridge design has to be judged on it's own. But even then, variations in the cartridge OAL due to tolerance issues can still get you into big trouble.

Probably 90% of people that shoot on a regular basis don't know or can't appreciate the genuine miracle that modern guns and ammo are. Tolerances so tight that variations as small as a human hair can disrupt the whole show.

My Scorpion has never had any issue with any ammo I haves fed it.

The ONLY thing I ever saw my Scorpion have issues with was the Berrys Target Hollow Point bullet, even when loaded ridiculously short. But everything had an issue with that bullet. Everything else, hand load or factory, worked flawlessly.

When I was running a CZ demo a couple of years ago, the range staff mixed some .380 into the 9mm ammo bowls. My Scorpion didn't like the .380 (fired but wouldn't cycle). Other than that, ate everything 9x19 that I fed to my Scorp.

Mine has not given me any problems. In fact, I had a batch of factory ammo that was underpowered. That ammo jammed in every semi pistol I own, including my Glock 19 which was always 100% reliable. I tried it in the Scorpion and it ran without issue.
