Brand new CZ TSO .4S&W malfunction
« on: August 26, 2021, 10:54:06 PM »
I recently purchased a CZ TSO (.4 S&W) and 3rd day in the range and during a rapid fire, the gun jammed 4 times - essentially failed to eject the spent cartridge. On one occasion, I couldn't even take the magazine out as it was jammed up. I had to use a range rod to get the cartridge out. I came home very disappointed. called CZ the next day and they told to send the gun back - in fact I am taking it back to the seller (as I purchased a warranty) and will let a Gunsmith check out what's wrong with it. It is a beautiful and accurate (2" grouping @ 25 yards) gun but I am disappointed with such issues for an expensive gun.

Next day, I disassembled the gun and found the recoil buffer was completely destroyed. Noticed that the gun came with 4 extra buffers, 2 thin and 2 think ones - decided to put back the thick one. How can the buffer go bad after 300 rounds? Is that normal? Cleaned the gun up and put it back together - planning to take it back to range in coming long weekend and see if it malfunctions again.

Anyone experienced similar issues? Could this be a spring stiffness issue (extractor spring)?

Any insight would be highly appreciated.

Both my original TacSport and TSO chewed up the buffer pretty quickly, I just took them out, and haven’t really noticed a big difference.

It sounds like you have an extractor issue.  A close up picture of the extractor claw and breechface would help.

Have you dropped the slide on a loaded chamber?  CZ's don't like this and it can damage the extractor.  Will the extractor hold a spent case up against the breechface (field strip and check without a barrel)?

Before you took it out did you clean the pistol thoroughly?  The factory preservative shouldn't be confused with lubrication.  I'd completely clean/degrease the gun and lube properly before going out again.  Pay attention to the area behind the extractor claw when cleaning, with dirty ammo it can build up and cause feeding issues.

The buffer is optional, I use them because it helps soften the recoil impulse.  They do wear out and do get chewed up, mine last much longer than 300 rounds.

I'm not sure why you would need a range rod to clear a double feed?  It seems that there could be some sort of ammo issue as well?  Are these factory or reloaded?  Have you plunk tested the ammo in the barrel?  How far is the brass getting tossed when it does extract properly?

Cheers,
Toby

tdogg asked some good questions.  The response to those will be on interest to me as well.

As far as the buffers go, major power ammo will chew them up faster than plinking ammo.  Reducing the power factor on my 40 loads to a 157 power factor has almost totally eliminated buffer wear.  Having a bunch of those buffers in your stash could be worth while if you are not a reloader.

Went to a brass buffer to protect my pistol.  Probably only change out every 2,000 rounds and my loads are in pf 170 range.

Think I got them from Henning.
