Has anyone noticed how people who propose stuff like this, never even attempt to articulate how it would benefit/help/prevent crime?

not like politicians think in the first place about anything other than money or power.

Gun control is a great example of the Two Laws of Politics postulated by the British-American Sovietologist, Robert Conquest:

(1) Generally speaking, everybody is reactionary on subjects he knows about.

(2) Every organisation appears to be headed by secret agents of its opponents.
