Congrats & keep us informed of your journey with it

So far I’ve found that it’s just surface rust. I stripped it completely down and havent seen anything that is alarming or appears to be stripped to bare metal and attempted to be reblued. Just cleaning with a tooth brush and some CLP. I may have gotten extremely lucky.

Little progress. Does this appear to be stripped down to bare metal? This is the first time I’ve ever done something like this.

Making progress on the barrel as well. I’m shocked it even came anywhere close to clean.

So this is kind of what I’ve been dealing with. It’s cleaning up quite nice and other than possibly bayonet lug, I haven’t found anything that says somebody has tried to refinish any part of it. Most of it (that whitish colored oxidation) is coming right off with a tooth brush and some CLP.

I’ve never seen oxidation like that before. Is that from a failed touch-up job or, is it that more from being packed in grease for import and not thoroughly cleaned?

I’m sorry if these are silly questions. But if I don’t have to refinish the whole gun that would be an awesome deal.

Any and all help/input for my annoying questions would be absolutely appreciated!!

Thanks, MOShoot

Refinish it if you think it worth it, we never can tell you might later find it attractive if it finally get to you

Just by looking at it compared to my 1940 Oberndorf k98 it doesn’t look like it is all that bad finish wise. I do think the only part he tried to refinish was the St George coin on the stock.

MissouriCZShooter, I have a Spanish Mauser that was pretty rough when I got it, and it had (has) headspace issues, so it is not a shooter without some gunsmith help. I decided to refinish it "in the white". I completely disassembled and stripped all the blued metal by soaking in vinegar, then went at it with very fine sandpaper, finishing with 0000 steel wool. Then I soaked it all in oil for days. I also stripped the stock, sanded without affecting the contours, and stained and finished with 5 or 6 coats of tung oil. I like the way it turned out, especially  the dark/light contrast
