No recess in frame for a 'conefit' guide rod.
« on: October 30, 2021, 12:08:36 PM »
I have an old Springfield Armory P9, basically a small-frame Tanfoglio, standard length slide. I just got a Henning conefit guide rod and buffers. When I went to install them I see now that there is no bevel on my frame where the GR sits, thus the cone fit does not sit flush with the frame (the GR rests on the cone part). The pictures on the vendor site show the cone nesting in a bevel on the frame so I guess this is a change in the Tanfoglio design post 1994.

Has anyone else ever encountered this with their clone? How did you resolve it?

TIA

I’ve never encountered that myself and I’ve dealt with a lot of the clones. Post some pictures if you can.

You should be able to see the non-beveled shoulder and how the GR does not sit flush with the frame. Thanks.

Hmmm, I’m not 100% sure on that one. When I get home from work tonight I’ll take a look at the ones I have and see how they fit. I don’t think that’s a problem but I’ll get back to you.

Is there any excess material in the guide rod perch keeping it from seating properly?

No, GR socket is clean and it rests only on the 'cone'.
Here is the vendor image that makes me think my frame is not compatible:

Yeah that’s the same image I found when I did a search. Ok, I’ll let you know something when I get home tonight.

Ok the cone fit GR’s fit properly in my Tanfoglio, BUL Ltd, IMI, & IWI pistols. Looking at your pictures again it looks like there’s no bevel at the face of the guide rod channel, it’s just a straight cut. The channel appears to be cut deep enough though. If it were my gun I would install the cone fit guide rod and shoot it to see what it does but that’s me. I think it’ll work fine but maybe let a gunsmith put eyes on it first.

Have you looked into the DPM Systems recoil springs? They eliminate slide to frame contact when shooting. I run them in my IMI & IWI pistols but they fit some of my other clones too.

Thank you very much for taking time to confirm this.

I agree the GR should work fine as is. My primary goal is to start using recoil bumpers and I should be able to modify the holes in the plastic ones to work with my peculiar configuration. In the mean time I will see what some gunsmiths say about adding a bevel, but not a priority at this point.

At least this is now documented for other early Springfield Armory P9 owners.

Issue resolved.

I found a gunsmith that agreed to add a recess for the cone-fit guide rod. He removed the trigger and components and then used a 45 degree grinding tool to create the bevel. (actually he said the frame was so hard he went through a few of the grinding tools to get the GR to sit flush).

With a buffer that is 0.080" the gun works perfectly and the slide release can still engage correctly, but a 0.140" buffer was too thick.

Glad you got her workin. Did you apply a little cold blue on the bevel he cut?
