1st ever DIY mods on SP-01 and range test
« on: January 11, 2022, 01:13:16 AM »
I've had my SP-01 manual safety for a few years but never changed anything except the grips and the sights. (Sights I had done by a gunsmith). Recently my buddy showed me his his CZ P-01 with all kinds of CGW goodies installed and I realized that I'm missing out. I am not new to firearms, but I am new to gunsmithing so this was my 1st real attempt at it. I did the following:
* Changed trigger pin to CGW floating trigger pin
* Changed trigger to CGW “Old Style” 85C trigger
* Changed trigger spring to CGW reduced power trigger spring
* Changed recoil spring to #13
Process took me 2 attempts over about 2 hours along with a lot of cursing. Needless to say that I have a new found respect for gunsmiths. In the end I was successful and got some range time today to try it out. With the new mods I had some of my best shooting in recent history. At 15+ yds I was nailing small targets. Even some of the old-timers commented on my targets. Even though it's not easy, I am looking forward to more "customizing" on my CZ. I may have a new obsession.

Excellent! Those are indeed good mods to make. I did all that to my SP-01 Tactical with the exception of the recoil spring. It's a shooter for sure.

Nice going!  Working on CZs can be a little persnickity but sounds like you successfully made it through your first foray!

You’ll appreciate having the floating trigger pin if/when your TRS breaks or you replace it because it’s getting old.  The 13 lb mainspring should have dropped your DA down into the 7-ish lb range and SA around 3-ish lbs.  The 13’er is considered the best all-around spring weight that should reliably ignite all ammo from domestic factory to mil surplus.

Some people go even lower and run an 11.5 or even an 8 lb main spring to drop the DA down into the 5-6 lbs range. But unless you also install the CGW extended firing pin and reduced weight FP spring, or exclusively use Federal primers, you could run into reliability issues with lite strikes.

Something else to consider while you’re marveling at your much improved DIY work is internal polishing.  There’s a lot of videos on YouTube that cover this.  That also helps bring down the trigger pull weight faster than just shooting thousands and thousands of rounds which will also ‘polish’ the internals.

Pug,

Congrats!  I caution you to know that this can become an addiction and you will be forever a trigger snob once you tune your CZ!  They all will need the "treatment" once you wonder down this rabbit hole.

Cheers,
Toby

Glad to hear that things went well. What is your next tuning project going to be?:)
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

Way to go Pug!

Don't be intimidated now that you have this project under your belt!

I know how you feel. I upgraded my 85C after years of use and was amazed. Couldn't believe it took me so long to get on the bandwagon!
I just finished my SP01.
Both now Cajunized.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do next. I have to shoot the gun more and see how it feels and what it calls for. Besides, I'm now having nightmares about searching the floor for tiny pins and springs.   :D

You haven't lived till you get through your first CZ decocker assembly. Like anything once you've done a few they get easier.

Agreed! What really gets me is I want the triggers to all be as smooth as my 97BD turned out to be. I thought I did each gun following the exact same procedure, yet my D/A on my SP-01 felt less smooth than my 97 or 75D Compact. Tore that thing down a few times putting each piece in to check movement. Found it on the fourth try. Shot a ton of rounds through it between each attempt, never had an issue and gun was as accurate as anything I have shot or own, but that feel in D/A bugged me. You'll see. Tdogg is right.

Facts are facts. I installed the CGW pro package in a single CZ and it turned a pretty darn good gun into an awesome gun. That set off the domino effect and now all 5 of my CZ's wear the CGW treatment. Any new ones that come along will also get the treatment. Once you start you can't stop.

Like anything else.

The more you do it, the better you get at it.

And, some mods are just right, some don't give you what you were looking for.  The trick is figuring out the benefit for dollar based on the performance.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I'm sorry I didn't congratulate you earlier, welcome to the club.

I could not have described it better:

If your looking for nexts on the cheap side, try a SAO trigger. The race hammer kit (with adj, sear) is the money.

Congrats. If you want to do so polishing or add other goodies, you'll be surprised how quickly you can tear it down and put it back together again.  First time, it took me 4 hours, including watching videos and Dr. Atlas while I was doing it, to install a Pro Package. Second time same gun, 1 hour. Third time, etc, 15 minutes.
