Anyone using Remington 1 1/2 spp for 9mm ?
« on: September 28, 2022, 10:18:04 PM »
I have found a couple cases of Rem. 1 1/2 small pistol primers for a good price but a friend says they are not recommended for high pressure rounds. I've never used Remington primers before but I have always assumed 1 1/2's were standard primers and 5 1/2's were magnum. Would my RMR 115gr and 124 gr JHP mid range loadings using Sport pistol be considered a high pressure round ?  I guess I could use them for 38 Spl. and small primer 45 ACP but it might take the rest of my life to shoot 10,000 of them.

I've gone through several thousand Remington 1-1/2 primers in the last 2 years and consider them the equal of any standard primer, like Winchester. But I agree. If I was going to shoot high pressure rounds like 9 Major or 9x23Win, then I would certainly be using Magnum or Small Rifle primers, and Remington 5 are the safe equivalent for that.

At least in the southeastern US, Remington primers have not been available on any lasting or volume basis. I believe lack of familiarity has lead to a lot of misunderstanding.

I have not had to purchase small pistol primers for a few years, but when I did purchase and use Remington 1 1/2 SPP's, they worked just as reliably as any others.  One thing that I found, and don't know if it's still true, is that the diameter of Remington SPP's is ever so slightly smaller than other small pistol primers.  Since the diameter of Remington and S&B primer pockets are slightly smaller than other primer pockets, they seem to fit better in those cases.  They also seemed to seat too easily in the primer pockets of other cases.

Wobbly did your #1 1/2 primers have a warning on the package not to use for high pressure loads ? these new production Remington primers do.  I'll be extra cautious when working up loads with these primers and watch for signs of flowing primers.

It’s been years, but my experience with 1-1/2s was they work like other standard primers. No issues. I used them in 9mm and.380acp.

No. But mine came to me in a reloading press sale and were several years old by the time I got them.

My Remington primers don't have any notices about high pressure loads.  They were purchased in 2018.  I don't shoot any major loads.  I usually do the 130-135PF area.

As a side note, they work fine in a gun with a lightened firing pin spring, but the S&B primers are not consistent in it.

If it goes "boom" or "vroom" I'm intersted.
