New Tool - Accushadow 2
« on: August 27, 2022, 01:06:49 AM »
Well my wife was really lenient and didn't make me sleep on the couch after purchasing another tool for USPSA.  In fact, she didn't object much at all.  I think the timing was just right and the stars aligned for me on this deal.  I should go buy a lottery ticket or something!

I've been threatening to build a Carry Optics rig for USPSA and was mulling over my options on what I would want and how much I could swing.  I was contemplating a standard Shadow 2 optic ready variant, a Shadow 2 then having CZC mill the slide for the RDS plate, an A01 SD with the RDS plate, or a Shadow 2 Orange with the RDS plate.

I did briefly look at the AccuShadow 2 but for the same money I could get the Shadow 2 Orange so I wasn't really that interested.  Not that I don't think the CZC crew builds inferior guns but just the fact that the frame to slide fit is so much tighter on the Orange (I have TSO's).  The rest you can tune yourself to get exactly what you want, the barrel lockup and frame/slide fit are much more difficult to tune.

I actually was planning on just building a standard Shadow 2 up and running it with the RDS plate.  I really wanted an A01 after handling one at nationals a couple of years ago but really couldn't justify the cost.  The standard Shadow 2 with some upgrades to tune the action would be just fine in the run-n-gun competitions.

Enter gunbroker and me spying a listing that advertised a standard Shadow 2 but pictured a AccuShadow 2 in the listing.  It was a used gun and the pictures were of the actual gun in the auction.  The auction had no reserve and when I spyed it, it was currently priced at $900.  They didn't mention it was an AccuShadow 2 nor did they really show the barrel bushing in any of the pictures.  It was a used gun 2020 model year and had laser etched CZC Mesa AZ on the frame.  They didn't show the CZC target or the much of anything in the listing.  It just said the gun was "Great quality pistol in fantastic shape."  I don't think they knew what they had.  So I watched it and of course the price went up near auction close but I bid and eventually won it for much less than the MSRP.

Picked it up today and it looks brand new.  Everything that should be in the box was there, target, manual, bushing wrench, buffers, thin safety, etc...  Two of the magazines haven't been used at all and the third is only lightly marked near the mag release hole.  It hasn't been shot much.  It has Henning grips on it as well which I've wanted to try for some time but the cost has deter'd from pulling the trigger.

I detail stripped it and everything is clean.  The CZC sheet listed a 3.25lb SA and 8.5lb DA trigger pull.  I measured and average of 3.25lb SA and 8.0 lb DA trigger pull.  The DA is smooth and the SA has a nice short reset.  There is nothing I really would want to do to this aside from increase the trigger reach for my large hands.  This will motivate me to design and print a DA/SA trigger for the CZ platform.

I hope to shoot it this weekend and see how it runs.  I verified my reloads plunk and did a push test with my current bullet.  The chamber is slightly shorter than my SP-01 (my current shortest CZ chamber) but I think my reloads will run just fine.  I might eventually work up a load to see if there is a different accuarcy node with this gun verses what I currently load.

Anywho, as you can tell by my rambling I'm gitty and I can't wait to shoot it.  I'll post pictures soon.

Cheers,
Toby

Made it out today between microbursts of rain I was able to dial in the sights and run about 100 rounds down the pipe.  It was shooting about 3 inches high and 3 inches left at 25yds.  I did a quick sight drift and elevation adjustment and it was right on first try!

I was able to shoot 2.5-3 inch groups at 25yds freestyle consistently.  This is about on par with my TSO's maybe a little better.  The POA = the POI but during drills I was consistently shooting left about 3 inches.  It was me and my grip/trigger pull with this smaller frame on the shadow 2.  I will definitely need to design a longer reach trigger and/or get thicker grips.  The recoil was going straight up and down which is good.  It's light compared to my TSO's in 40.

I didn't have time or patience to take many photos due to the rain interupting my shooting.  Tis monsoon season in the southwest and we've had a really good monsoon this year.  Flooding aside, we needed the moisture bad.

Here is one of the 25yd groups shot freestyle:

Interesting side note that the trigger guard on the Shadow 2 will lock in on the DAA Alpha X holster with the original more open TSO insert.  It is a little loose but will lock and didn't affect my draw much.  I have a Redhill Tactical holster on order, so I will have to setup a second rig for this gun eventually.  For today, the holster was good enough for practice draws and drills.

Can't wait to get the slide milled and start running this gun in carry optics.  I think it is a winner.

Cheers,
Toby

Nice!😎  I still need to dial in the dot on my AccuShadow 2 to see how accurate it is.

Very nice!  How do you like the RDS system?  I can't get CZCustom to return my call, they must be really busy.

Toby

It seems like a good system.  The dot sits noticeably lower than the dot on my Shadow 2 OR.

Nice! I love tools also. Maybe someday I’ll get a bushing wrench.  :D

I was really happy that it came with the wrench!  :)  It is a fairly snug bushing fit and I'd hate to have to bugger it up with pliers.

That reminds me, I just purchased an FW Arms decapper and it has hardened steel decapping pins that have a very small flat on them to tighten.  I didn't realize they came with a wrench and was using pliers.  After I got it on with pliers I found the wrench with the instructions.  It's much easier when you have the right tool for the job!

Cheers,
Toby
