10mm decision time.
« on: January 04, 2021, 01:40:48 PM »
Backstory: a couple of years ago I bought a wonder finish EAA witness in 10mm. After 2 boxes of warmish 10mm, (Sig Elite) I realized that 8t was not for me. After much trying to figure what was wrong, I determined that the backstrap/grip is not really sized for me. Basically when I grip, the heal of my hand comes off the backstrap so the recoil goes into my thumb.  I sold it and moved on.

I want another double stack 10mm to go with the 1911 I built. I was looking at a Stock 3 and a Limited. The question I need to know is if the grip frame dimensions are any different from the basic one. I would like the heal of my hand to rest on the backstrap.  It makes shooting 10mm so much better, plus my reloads tend to the peppy side of things.

Thanks

Consider any of the Dan Wesson 10 mm's.

I have the DW Bruin Long Slide in 10 mm--a really nice 1911 style.

I also have a FK 7.5 BRNO PSD (Polymer frame version of the FK 7.5 BRNO Field Pistol) with an additional 10 mm barrel on the way**.

Swapping the barrel to 10 mm lets you train with the frame with less powerful and less expensive ammo before shooting the 7.5 FK rounds.

**I was told that it was going to ship Christmas week and arrive at my LGS on 12/26.  To date I haven't heard back (phone or email) from FK BRNO US to see what's holding up my PSD and the additional ammo that I've ordered.

*** Update - calling (AGAIN) today I reached their Director of Operations at FKBRNOUS and he assure me that my PSD would be shipping in the next day or two.

You might try a poly. The grip is basically the same dimension front to back but its about .25" thinner than a steel frame with stock rubber grips. This info is based on my older AE serial numbered guns

I think a longer frame would be better.  My hand size is large, I guess (8 1/2" from heel to middle finger tip with 4 3/4" being palm). When I grip a 97, there is about a finger width between my fingers and palm and my fingers touch my palm on a P365. A Desert Eagle is about the only handgun that had a place for my left hand to get good purchase on the frame.

What happens is when I grab the large EAA frame, my fingers can wrap from the first knuckle (from the palm) all the way around which pulls the heel of my hand off the backstrap.  When i grap a double stack 1911 that doesn't happen because the grip is thick enough that it can't happen.  So am I just SOL with an EAA?

Just measured my hand is about 8.25 oal and about 4.25 palm. I have skinny fingers. I am about the same as you with the steel witness as you are with the CZ97. With the poly I'm about .625 to .75 on the poly witness. I hope that helps.

With your hands being large have you tried the Glock 20 or 40? I know it was probably not what you were looking for but some of the largest grips around, especially when you add the thick back strap.

Yeah, I had a G20 for a while, something abt Glocks but I can't shoot them very well. My 10yrd targets look like a shotgun pattern.

Too much shooting czs, my hand always interferes with the slide stop.  1911s need to have the grip safety almost disabled so that I can shoot with my grip.

Wasn't on the radar, and not exactly a clone, but a black Megastar 10mm followed me home. The rails are outside the slide, like a CZ, and that is about it. It is heavy, beefy, and fits my hands pretty well.  Will try to get some pics up

That’s awesome!!! Nice to see one of the few Megastars in 10mm still in existence! I’ve owned one since brand new in 45acp. Wish I would’ve bought one in each caliber. The place had like 5 of each old/new stock when I bought mine.  Any pictures?

One of my sons and my son in law love to make fun of it because it’s so big and heavy. They’re both Glock fan boys 🤢 🤮. Anyway for some reason none of them can shoot as accurately as me when I use it and neither will take my challenge of me allowing them to hit it with their Glocks (Austrian for Hi Point) 10 times and then I get to hit their Glocks with it 10 times! I wonder why? 🤔
