fiber optic rod is melting after 200 rounds
« on: November 21, 2022, 06:25:15 PM »
In training session after about 200 rounds fiber optic filament front end starts melting because of temperature. Rod is moving backward significantly.
How to replace fiber element in the right way? Open flame will bubble filament end as a result rod is not 100% transparent. Was using soldering pencil tip through peace of foil to produce shiny flat screw-style hat. Im using ebay version fiber optics 1.5 mm rod

Practice with a bbq lighter on extra FO rods. You should be able to produce a nice pan head screw profile on the end of the rod with some practice. Don’t let the rod catch on fire. Stop sooner rather than too late. You can always touch it up with more heat.

Unless the rods are substandard, you should be able to get the result you want.

That is why I like the Dawson front sights, they have a recession/counterbore on the rear of the blade (the side you look at when aiming) that provides a consistent size dot.  It makes melting the fiber so much easier when changing it out.  The front of the sight dot size doesn't matter as you don't see it (as long as it is big enough to not pull through).

In my experience if you leave about 1/16 of an inch exposed on either side of the sight it will result in a good size dot.  You just have to practice how close to get the flame as mentioned already.

Cheers,
Toby

This seems to be a common issue with TiteGroup powder.
