"Hogback" Stock ? & Aperture-Peep Rear Sight ?
« on: August 26, 2003, 10:16:36 AM »
Greetings- This is my first post.

I'm considering buying a 550 lux and maybe a 527 lux in .223. I would really like to find a 550 lux in .270 Win.  Since the .270 Win. isn't available in the 550 lux, I've been thinking about the 550 medium in 7mm Rem Mag.  One of my concerns is that the "hogback" stock design is going to have a lot more felt recoil than the straighter American stock.  Also, is there a simple method to mount a aperture-peep rear sight on the 550/527 actions. I will use a scope for most of the time, but like having the option of using open sights and having a back-up sighting system.

Or I could buy the 550 American in .270 Win. and have the front and rear sights mounted.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I seen pictures of 601 actions with the pop-up peep sight. That would be perfect.

Your comments and suggestions are most appreciated-Fred

I have a 550 7mag. The stock allows iron sight use well including a peep. Problem is mounting a peep. The irons installed at the factory work fine. You can use the front with a peep. The peep will need to be removed for a scope. The safety lever and bolt release block a side mounted detachable peep like the foolproof sight,.

As a back up the issue sights work fine and are the irons I use on the gun for that purpose. Recoil is mild as the gun is heavy for a 7 mag. (Turkish Walnut)

It is a good, all around rifle.

The peep sight arrangement used to be mfgr. by Brno and machined within the receiver. Needless to say these are no longer available. Possibly a Mauser 98 peep sight may be fitted to a CZ receiver(sorry but you're left on your own on this one-no quick easy fitting parts available) You would be better of with a CZ classic styled stock for recoil.

I was not sure at first of the stock. Off the bench a straight classic is better. However, Im finding off the shoulder shots from this stock are easier than a classic.  Im calling mine a running gun as I seem to run then shoot it. Im avoiding bench shooting it because it is not pleasant.  20 rounds or less should not be an issue. Last time out at the range I fired 40, and had no problems off the shoulder. I zeroed originally with 25 or so, I had a nice bruise.
