"FUN" with the slide stop on the '83
« on: December 28, 2023, 03:13:59 PM »
I've got an 83 and following a YT video referenced in this forum, I filed gently on the inside of the plastic grips to lower the lip on the boss for the screw hole, and then ordered some 4mm OD 0.5mm wire by 10mm compression springs to lower the mag release force. That all worked well. I've even got two of the "crappy" mags to drop freely. Burnishing with moly helped a lot! Removing a skosh of metal helpted even more.

My problem is that the spring (#42) in the parts diagram from Numrich moved out of position! It is the spring which controls the slide stop lever. I've no idea how that happened, but trying to get it to stay there after reassembling the weapon has proved to be difficult.

On the Numrich diagram pin #40 looks like a roll pin. In my weapon the pin is stepped on one end with a head on the other end. There is a hole in the slide stop which is larger toward the front of the weapon and into which I inserted it. My spring has a half loop on one end, and that fits over pin #40. Getting into the hole in the slide stop can be a challenge for those of us with less than perfect vision. I managed to insert it and got the looped end to settle around the pin with the spring pressed to the right hand side of the weapon. Testing the slide stop showed it worked properly and I thought it was done. I started to re-install the slide and discovered it wouldn't go into position. Closer examination showed the trigger guard wasn't seating fully, and tilting the weapon let the slide lock drop free. The loop seemed to fit perfectly around the center portion of the pin and I don't see what would cause the spring to move to the left. When I removed the slide and looked, the spring was all the way to the left side and was interfering with the trigger guard's complete return from the slide removal position.

Does any one know how to beat this beast into submission?

The springs were sourced from the big A. I tried to find them locally, but no luck. The Ace Hardware selection referenced in the YT video didn't exist in my local Ace.

Once again 4mm OD 0.5mm wire diameter 10mm free length. It works perfectly without trimming at all!

I bought a complete spring rehab kit for my 82 that I am about to refinish from these guys.

The slide stop spring in my pistol was already buggered up when I got it although it functioned fine so I ordered a spare one of these with the above. Just in case its needed.

I'm totally frustrated with the small hooked spring, so I'm going to make a replacement part. Rather than try to make the hook, I'm winding a short section to hole the straight part on the pin. The wound portion won't do anything but guarentee the straight piece stays on the left side. While I was messing with trying to get the hook to stay put, I was having problems seeing the hole in the slide stop. I've previously discovered a way to make dark on dark items stand out. I take a permanent marker which is fluorescent and put the tip on what ever I want to see. In this case it's the hole. I've got a couple of UV sources and you can see how well it works. Don't forget to make both objects visible - see images. I'm waiting on my spring wire, I'll post pictures when I've finished.

Success!

I lost the first spring I made when my tweezers slipped with the spring under tension. So I made another one. I took the pin the spring used for leverage and chucked it into my drill, slipped the spring wire between it and one of the chuck pieces and tightened the chuck. I knew I wanted the spring to rest on the top of the pin when assembled, and I knew the spring needed to be inserted into the hole on the slide stop which was on the left hand side of the weapon. Net, net, I reversed the drill and ran it slowly; carefully winding the spring for 5 turns. I released the chuck and pulled the pin out with the spring still on it. I used a thin punch as a left side guide pin to get the spring centered, then inserted the proper pin from the right side. I left the spring wire long to prevent any possibility of slippage. I also used the permanent marker liberally on the spring wire which helped insert it into the slide stop prior to putting the pin into place. The images show the finished assembly.

My source for the spring winding trick is www.youtube.com/weevilgenius. The guy makes prototype toys for toy manufacturers.

Full disclosure requires that I fill in what has happened since the last post. I've still had success with the custom spring, however I was forced to shorten straight leg. Functional testing showed that the trigger guard would not smoothly close with the canted spring, thus the trim. At the same time it was clear that the last winding, the one which became the straight leg, was not tight enough which was probably why the trigger guard didn't smoothly close. Tightening the last winding, together with the shortening of the leg fixed that problem. I must say the most time was spent trying to get the pivot pin of the trigger guard to seat. I had been trying to drive it in from the right with no success. Finally I tried left to right and it slipped in easily... DUH. No idea why. Function checks showed everything working normally. Slide locks back on an empty mag, The force to release the slide is not different that I can tell. All in all I'm happy with the result. It's not Czech, but it works for me. YMMV.
