457 Varmint Pro vs MTR
« on: April 22, 2023, 03:54:20 PM »
Greetings

I am going to purchase a 457 in 22 LR to compete in production class in NRL22 and PRS matches, I am considering the Varmint Pro 16.5" barrel (MSRP $699) and the Varmint MTR (MSRP $849). Their MSRP is going to significantly effect my scope options, due to the $1,200 limit in NRL22.

My questions: Is there a difference (of consequence) between the Varmint Pro and MTR in their A) trigger, B) action, C) chamber, or D) the barrel, other than threaded 16.5" vs 20"?

Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge,

Ken

Hi - I'd suggest going with the V-MTR just for the slight edge in accuracy. "Buy once ." . . Then look for a good USED FFP scope with at least 12x, more is better.  A good place to look is RFC - they have a wide market base.

You might want to find someone with a Varmint MTR to handle before making a decision. The MTR has a 20.5” barrel in a stock made for benchrest shooting.  Both rifles have the same action/trigger. MTR has longer barrel and match chamber. MTR may be a little unwieldy for what you want and if not shooting at paper not sure the added accuracy is worth it.

I vote for the 16.5” ProVarmint

Just my 2 cents

One other thought, and yes I know we are in a CZ forum but I have a friend with a Bergara BMR steel. Almost 2 lbs lighter than the CZ, cheaper and his is a tack driver.  Just a thought if you have not looked at those.

I shot a CZ 455 VPT w/ the 20.5” varmint barrel (.820” dia @ the muzzle) in NRL22 and PRS22 for over a year before moving onto a Vudoo w/ a 22” no-taper contour.  The 455 shot well, but I had to add a bunch of weight to the front end plus leave my bipod on to get the gun to balance right for shooting off props.  I see a few CZ’s with the 16.5” barrel and all of them are butt heavy which makes it harder to build a solid position when shooting off ladders, tank traps, saw horses, tires, barrels, cinder blocks, etc.

IMO, for positional shooting you want the rifle set up so that the balance point is 4-5” in front of the magazine.  That way when you place the rifle on top of a sandbag that is draped over a barricade it just sits there on its own.

If it helps any, the cap for the Base division is now $1300, however, there is not very cost effective to purchase a rifle/scope combo specifically to stay in Base. You shoot the same course of fire and distances in the same amount of time. The only difference is you are hamstringing yourself with MSRP value and can't take advantage of sales, pro deals, or used equipment. There is a VERY small list of rifle/scope combos that keep one under even the $1300 cap, and for what, being on a different column on the Excel spreadsheet than 80% of the other shooters. My philosophy is Base is meant for shooting what you have, and Open is for buying what you want or can afford.

To answer your questions, the trigger and action are the same throughout the 457 line. The chambers are different, Match on any 457 denoted 'MTR' and Bentz on all of the others. Balance and weight play large role in NRL/PRS. The longer barrel with the weight up forward can be of benefit. I see a LOT of 457 MTR's at matches. With a YoDave trigger spring and a Area 419 Arca rail attached, they can keep up with anything out there...if the shooter does their part.

Not a good trying to high jack this thread but we moved to Peachtree City Georgia and I can’t find a nice outdoor range to shoot my 457’s. Again sorry to change the subject but I saw a welcome from Georgia. Thank you, Michael. We’ve been here 1 year

Look on the web under Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). They operate about a dozen or so outdoor rifle ranges around the state. Several around Atlanta. These are intended for zeroing your deer rifles for the purpose of "humane kills", but they don't mind if you sit there all day and plink either.
