Newbie SAO P09
« on: June 30, 2016, 07:02:49 PM »
Hi guys and gals. I have had my eye on a Witness series gun for a while but the local gun shop had a Urban grey P09 in and I couldn't resist. Took it home and obviously the first thing I did was void the warranty.  O0
I tapped the trigger for an overtravel screw, cleaned up the sear and them sat there and thought: self, this would be just a little cooler if it was just like a big overgrown uber high capacity 1911. The wheels started turning.
I machined in a forward trigger stop just past the reset point and voila! Single action only P09. So now I've doubly voided the warranty. Maybe some day I will actually shoot it!
Some will wonder why I nixed the double action and rightfully so. Personal preference played the major role in deciding. I'm just a cocked and locked kinda guy.

And hammer down.

Cool. How'd you do the forward trigger stop?  I just installed a cgw "pro package", but even with the reduced power trigger return spring, the return is still long, and a bit hard to time imho.

Neat, first time i have seen this done. The DA of the P series is my least favorite part but i am not sure i would want to give up second strike capability to get rid of it. An interesting mod none the less. Thank you for the post.
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

Lane478--

I mocked up a pretravel stop a couple of years ago but it was too temporary.  I would be very interested in seeing how you made your stop.  The only other detail that I found after trying the pretravel stop was that the safety is located so far forward in the frame that it is hard to activate with the shooting hand thumb.  I think that can be made better with a ledge added to the safety level but I decided to shelve the project since I was only shooting bullseye anyway.

Can you post some photos of your stop?

+1!!!!

I've got a P09 FDE at work that I have been thinking of building an Open gun out of.

I'll get a picture up tonight of the stop. The shelf on the safety will be the next project.

You can see here a cross pin under the front leg of the trigger return spring. I removed the front block and machined a small groove to place a pin right at the edge of the opening in the frame where the trigger face comes up on the return stroke. Now that pin prevents the trigger from coming forward. Actually, it was very simple once I figured out where exactly to place it.

Lane,
Thanks for the photo.  I will think about it some more myself.  I want to make an adjustable stop of some sort, simple enough to install without a machine shop.   I'm skilled in JB-Weld, not milling machines.  I tried a temporary J-B Weld stop but it was too temporary.  Something out of aluminum threaded for a set screw is what I need.  I think.

I'm so used to it DA/SA now that I won't mess with it much if it isn't an easy modification.   :) :)

The only real benefit to it is being able to minimize the pre travel. That and really messing people up that aren't used to a cocked and locked gun. It's so fun to see them flinch when I say "want to shoot it?" Gotta love a safety. That being said it is actually really easy to do. Once you pull the front block you can easily see where the sides need cut to put the pin in. I used a roll pin and cut it down first where it was a tight fit in the channel in the frame and then cut the block where the pin would lock in it. You will probably have to remove the trigger several times to relieve the leading edge to get the reset. Mine needed a little to get it to reset and have a little extra for clearance.

Lane,
I think you have the right idea with the cross pin stop above the front side of the trigger and below the trigger return spring.  I'm thinking of making an aluminum block to fit below the trigger return spring that would be held in place by the trigger return spring, perhaps.  At first I thought of just adding some tubing over the spring forward arm but an pressure or contact on that spring will eventually result in a stress concentration point and a failue of the TRS, I think.

Removing the block insert for modification is the key concept here, I think.  The way you did it is excellent, and won't create any additional problem, in my opinion.  Putting an insert in without pinning it can result is some serious jams if it comes loose!

Any additional thoughts or improvements on this particular modification? I have a P09 in 40 Cal that I would like to turn into a SAO to dabble in limited division.
Pretty much a CZ fanboy.

This thread is 7 years old and the OP hasn't been around in almost 7 years. I doubt that he's going to re-upload anything at this point unless someone else has a copy.
