Anyone see the new lights from Olight?
« on: November 22, 2023, 06:48:10 AM »
I bought one awhile back.  Valkyrie Turbo LEP.  Laser Excited Phosphor.  First (the ad says) of it's size for weapon mounted lights.  Pretty wild performance for it's size/power.  Won't go into the details you can see on their website.

I decided it wasn't what I wanted on a handgun and it's really (in my opinion) a specialized light on a carbine.

The LEP light and the LED light used for these two pictures are similar in "power".  The difference is in how focused the light beam is from them.

The LED light first.  Notice how it lights up the yard/grass/trees/fence, etc. about 25 yds. from my porch.  See the horse trailer across the road, pasture, near the tree line at the back of the pasture.  This is what I want on a handgun.  Something that lights up a wider area around/in front of me.

This is the new LEP light.  Same point of aim for the light.  Totally different effect.

Two terms (hope I get this right).  Throw - how far the light illuminates an object enough to see it and tell what it is.

Spill - how much light is spread around the central beam and lights up things around where you've got the light pointed.

You can see the LED light will show you things up closer to you that may be dangerous that you need to see/react to.  While the LEP light does a much better job of putting more light on a smaller area to help you see far off things better.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Interesting. I wonder how using both in tandem would fair on a rifle/shotgun?

The throw of that LEP is insane.
I don't hang lights off weapons but as husker commented, it would be intriguing to see how a combination of the two would fare.

FWIW- I own a handful of Olights and have never been disappointed with any of them.

If you are "searching", then the wider area of illumination would certainly help.

But if your intent was to "blind" so that a perp was temporarily unable to effectively aim back at you, then the narrow beam would be a huge asset.

Interesting stuff.  Thanks for the photos.

I’ve purchased 7 or 8 Olight models and they’ve been great quality for the price. Their making the Baldr S model with a blue laser too, though I don’t think they’re out yet. https://www.olightstore.com/baldr-s
