It was bound to happen...
« on: December 27, 2023, 11:20:29 PM »
I forgot my gun. I have had a REALLY bad week at work, with new kids deciding they "deserve" Christmas off and calling in all over my Complex. As the Complex Staffing Manager, it is my job to ensure every unit has sufficient staff, cross leveling staff from one place to another as required and the last several nights...that hasn't happened correctly. To wit, I have MANY shift commanders who are actively cussing my name...but that's another very long story. So how does this relate?
I went to work last night as usual, with CZ P-10C and two spare mags in my uniform belt...or I thought so. I was so distracted that I actually left my sidearm sitting on a chair at home. Now, no, don't worry, no children or incompetent adults are in the house, but imagine MY surprise when I asked for a gun locker key, (we can't carry personally owned weapons on duty, but store them in a Dept provided gun locker), and my holster was, shall we say, a wee bit light? The only thing I suffered was embarrassment, which my staff were VERY smart not to mention, (I have awesome kids working for me), and me stuffing an empty rig and two useless fully loaded spare mags in the locker, but in this stressful holiday time, stop to remember the little things, the normal routine...don't let the stupid overwhelm the smart.
Happy New Year, and as always, remember that firearms and alcohol don't mix well. I am now off to the store to see if they have any dignity on sale...cheap...

I'll bet you're not the only one.

We have a routines.  As we work through them if we get interrupted it can disrupt the routine.  I can be getting ready to go outside and my wife starts asking me questions about something and next thing I know I'm out back at the dog pens with and empty holster and two loaded mags. strapped on me.  Did it once when we were going shopping.  Driving down the road, did the elbow check of the IWB holster on my hip and there was no P07 in it.

Now I have this check routine I try to go through.  I pat my holster, my right rear pocket (wallet), my right cargo pocket (phone) and right front pants pocket (keys).  I may do that two or three times (another routine/habit) but I'm not forgetting the important stuff.

We did start home to WV Friday morning without the turkey roaster and the milk/buttermilk (for the biscuits and light rolls) but I have no routine check for that and I remembered them when we were only about 5 miles from the house.  But the P07, phone, wallet, IWB mag. pouch/mag and keys were where they should be when I'm on the road.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

That is what happens when you sit behind a desk. You forget things, like the weight in the hand of a gun that's loaded and one that's not.

Know that feeling of loaded magazines, and nothing to put them in, all too well. Got distracted by the grand kids while loading up for a range trip with my son on Tuesday. Started unloading at the club and quickly realized that I had left two guns at home. Sadly, that's not the first time I've done that. ....
No matter where you're going, there you are.

Or, like the time I went to a competition. Was going to shoot one gun in the morning and a different gun in the afternoon. After lunch opened up the range bag for that gun, had everything but the gun. It was still sitting in the gun sock on the kitchen table.  😞 SIGH

If it goes "boom" or "vroom" I'm intersted.

Had a friend show up to go hunting from out of state.  First morning out he opens up the hard rifle case and he'd left the bolt for the rifle at home. Oops. I've gone out varmint hunting and either forgotten or grabbed the wrong magazines for CZ 527 rifles a couple of times in the past.

My biggest worry is the day when this becomes the "New" routine. :(

Yep, if I decline that much, I'll sell off the guns and start carrying pepper spray. Or buy ginseng for memory, whichever is cheaper.  ;)

I've gone out varmint hunting and either forgotten or grabbed the wrong magazines for CZ 527 rifles a couple of times in the past.

I went to an Action Pistol match one Saturday morning. Packed my trusty SP01 and 4 mags. RO told me to "Load and make ready", so I drew the pistol, loaded the mag and sling-shotted the slide. Buzzer went off, but the gun just said click. So I sling shotted the slide again. Another click.

When we looked into the receiver we discovered I had brought four P01 magazines to the match. These will latch into the SP01, but don't lift the ammo nearly as high. So the ammo was sitting there about 1/4" too low to feed !!

A completely wasted day at the range.  :P
In God we trust; On 'Starting Load' we rely.
