CZ P01 safety won't engage properly - thoughts?
« on: January 22, 2024, 10:13:28 AM »
Hi, I purchased a used CZ P01 Omega. The previous owner had a CGW trigger, springs, hammer etc installed by a gunsmith (not CGW). When I bought it, it was in decock configuration. Shoots just fine in that configuration. I wanted to put it in safety configuration. I am competent with working on 1911's, Glocks, etc, but this is my first CZ. I watched a video from CZ USA (an a couple of others) on how to switch back and forth from decock to safety, seems easy.  I installed the safety in place of the decocker, and everything clicked right in as expected EXCEPT it doesn't pass the function test, the safety will not engage at full cock. It will engage at half cock and then you can thumb the hammer to full cock and the safety keeps the hammer from falling, and will disengage as it should, but won't engage at full cock as it should. I removed it and started over, again everything clicks right in, but same result. I know that the safety should only be used with the hammer fully cocked, so I switched back to decocker configuration until I can get it fixed.  I’d like to use it primarily in the safety configuration, so I need to figure this out.  I am no gunsmith but my skill level is where I can tear a 1911 down, put it back together, and I can fit most parts when needed.  I’m not going to take it back to the seller and the gunsmith that did the work is across the country and I was not his customer anyway. So my options seem to be fix it myself or send to a competent CZ gunsmith.

As mentioned, this is my first CZ, so I thought I would see if there was something obvious that I should look for, so I would appreciate any advice particularly if anyone has dealt with this problem before.

Thank you.

UPDATE:  Took the safety off again and replaced the safety detent plate with a new one.  Reinstalled the safety. Not sure exactly what solved the problem but it works now.

Late to the party but with my CZ P01 omegas I found that the plastic detent plate would wear over time and it was not immediately obvious that it was worn out by looking at it. But it would usually manifest itself as a loss positivity on safety engagement, i.e. almost no force required to engage /disengage and much less “click”. I did not see the  issue you mentioned though. I would recommend (if you hadn’t already) replacing the detent spring too or at least getting a replacement and comparing the old one’s length to the new one to make sure it hasn’t lost too much length. I had found the spring and detent plate wore together and pretty much needed replacing at the same time. Maybe that is why I used to see them sold as a pair?

Glad you got it figured out.

Never had that issue with any of my Omegas.  Maybe that one was messed as built or when the safeties were swapped in the first time and that's why the previous owner traded it off.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Yeah the plan was to replace both, but the new spring shot across the room and I haven't found it yet lol, so I put the old one back in and I ordered a couple new spring/plate sets and will swap it soon.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.
