Just put a new barrel in a used 97 I got recently. How do you determine a good fit?

Shoot it from a rest at 25 yards and then compare it to a known good pistol.  If neither group is good, figure out what you are doing wrong first then repeat the test.

If it has a factory bushing it should not be expected to group like a bullseye match pistol.  But it should function 100%.  At 25 yards from a rest, I'm thinking a 4" group with a factory bushing.  With a CGW bushing, probably 1/2 that.  (Mine will shoot 2" at 50 yards with match grade Atlanta Arms 185 gr JHP ammo.)
