No love here for the VZ61?
« on: July 26, 2024, 11:12:40 PM »
I've had mine for many years; first bought it at a gunshow, just because it looked interesting.  As a handgun, it was an ergonomic disaster, but it had that nasty look of a from-the-hip machine pistol.
I started seeing wire stocks and conversions; in an attack of being entirely too honest, did an SBR on it.  I replaced the open rear sight with a peep of my own creation.
The darn thing is silly fun to shoot.  I reload .32s, so feeding it isn't too big a deal.  It usually isn't fussy to feed, though it will act up occasionally.  It's best grasp it with the support hand on the magazine; a grip on the body will likely interfere with the charging knobs.
Anyway, am I the only dern fool here that likes such things?

I watched a video that said the VZ61 was designed specifically for tank personnel and for close combat: collapses to small size, uses smaller, light round and useful only at close distances.
I'm not a big fan of the .32 ACP round in my VZ50 & VZ70 because of feeding issues, but I do have a Beretta Tomcat that doesn't seem to have problems with them.

A couple of years ago, my son and I rented an original full-auto .32 ACP “Klob” Vz61 at Battlefield Vegas along with a 4.6mm HK MP7. Both were stupid fun to shoot full auto — practically no recoil at all!! However, I think the semi auto Vz61 was also chambered in .380, 9mm Makarov and maybe even 9mm Luger, which would be much more desirable as a SHTF weapon or range toy.

But it would be so cool to carry that little monster around in a surplus hip holster as a ccw.

I have a vz 61 in .380, so I feel pretty qualified to weigh in.

It's definitely a range toy, but it's a fun one. Pretty accurate, especially since you can use the mag as a grip (watch out for the reciprocating bolt studs though!) Mine's picky about ammo, with Remington UMCs I was having constant FTF, stovepipes, and keyholing, but most of the other brands I've tried are fine.
