CZ 712 firing pin
« on: September 17, 2006, 02:04:10 PM »
Hello,

Took it out for a test run before the ducks make their way down this year, and didn't have any problems that i noticed when firing.  Went to make sure there wasnt one in the pipe and lo and behold the firing pin was fully extended above the bolt, im not talkin a 1/16th of a inch, im talkin the whole thing!!!

broke it down oiled it up and it went back down, went to make sure it wasnt going to happen again by pullin the bolt all the way back to "load one up" and the firing pin was back all the way up. cant manually push it back down either, any Ideas on what happened?

Sounds like the firing pin (or the spring inside) has broken.  this has blown up a few 712's.

You are the first person who I have heard about with the problem, but withouht an exploded gun.  I'd be real interested to see what you have there..pics or a real good desription would be appreciated.

if i woulda thought about it i would have taken some pics, but today i brought it down the the local gunshop (also where i bought it) and they said that the firing pin has snapped.  the guy that normaly works on guns, was outta town, but will be in tomorrow, so gonna swing by and see what he has to say.
on another note, if this is/was one of the reasons the 2 that did blow up, i dont know if ill be holding onto it much longer.

i did a lil more research and did find out that the firing pin was the cause of the the blow ups, and im glad i noticed it when i did, not out in the feild on openin morning, and by myself no where near a hospital.

anyways, the firing pin (according to the guys at the shop) had snapped in half at the base, it looks clean enough that someone took a hacksaw and sawed clean through it.  Since the pin itself is tapered, the firing pin sticks forward through the bolt approx. 1 full inch, and because of the force of the hammer striking the back of the bolt it will make it stick forward and not able to be manually pushed back down unless you break the gun down.

sorry for the sorry attempt at me drawing it out, but dont have any pics, but this is a rough idea of what it looks like with the pin fully extended.

Your description was fine..I just don't have mine apart at the moment and couldn't remember what it all looked like.

Now I don't know how may of these they sold overall, but I'm going to guess that probably 5 percent of them have the FP failure within the first year if they are going to at all.  This is starting to worry me now, even though I have more than a 1000 rounds thru mine and it is a nice shooter.

what bothers me is if it will fail in year 2 or is it more of a case if you got a good one, then fine and if you didn't, you'd know by now.

I have heard of some kind of FP problems from time to time on the doubles, but I don't know if it is brittleness or heat treatment related failures.  Like I said...the last CZ sales rep I talked to admitted a few from his region had failed like that, but there was not improved firepin or any special recourse.

I take that back on the 'special recourse' part.  I think CZ usa took the guns back in the other instances and refunded the money somehow.

there is a fairly expensive benelli I want..I'd have to sell the huglu to get money for it anyhow..I wish I had more assurances that mine might be ok and to continue using it.

A co-worker complained today his 712 blew up. Happened at Triple B shooting range (an incredible coincidence, the same field where mine exploded last year!):o
