OK, I decided not to tack all this onto the largely-unrelated thread that BobC and drscooter, amongst others, were posting in. I wanted to talk about gun control laws in general, and those that seem to be in our near future. To that end, I will start. I hope we can all keep the discussion to facts and opinions, and not name-calling and slurs. I am aware this is a topic than generates a lot of emotional responses, but I'm hoping we can be passionate without getting too emotional.
So, unlike what some folks trying to stir up emotions in the recent election suggested, I'm pretty sure those in government who are, indeed, trying to completely eliminate firearms ownership in the US are not going to send troops around to seize them. Like many of these sorts of things, the RKBA will be nibbled away at bit by bit. And, again like so many of these things, it will be the poorer, and the inner city residents, who are paying and will continue pay the most.
The ammunition serialization schemes proposed will increase the cost of said ammo. That increase will cause some to forgo practice and thus make them less comfortable with their firearms, potentially leading to abandonment. Ditto for forcing manufacturers to include "child-safe" mechanisms. And the magic "safe gun" that will only fire for it's owner. Even if these things could be made to work, and be even reasonably reliable and useful, the added costs will force more than a few gun owners to relinquish their arms.
Other ideas?
