Sp-01 vs shadow frame difference?
« on: March 04, 2009, 12:53:32 PM »
It says on cz's site the shadow comes from a different mould with a few ergonomic changes.  Is this the only sp-01 using this new mould or are all new sp-01's using the same frame now? I can't see any difference in the photos. the only difference i see in any of the frames, (sp-01, tactical, and shadow) is the number of slot's on the light rail. Some have 2 slots and others have 3. If there is a grip difference is it significant? Thanks

I have both the SP-01 and the Shadow.  The SP-01 was made in 2006 while the Shadow was made in 2008.

The differences in the frame are:

The Shadow is undercut at the back of the trigger guard slightly deeper and the undercut at the back of the grip under the beavertail is deeper.  IF you look closely at the guns you will see the difference.  Lastly, the Shadow comes with a competition hammer that is wider than that found on the SP-01 hence the cut on the slide is wider on the Shadow.  The Shadow of course does not have frame and slide cuts for the firing pin block.

Interestingly the Shadow weighs more than the SP-01 suggesting the frame/slide may be slightly thicker but it is not evident by looking at the guns.

Given the time difference between manufacturing dates it is possible the frames come from different castings which would account for the differences mentioned.  If anyone has a SP-01 with a manufacturing date later than 20066 I would be interested in hearing if the above differences are still evidient.

Had an 05 and 06 SP01..one two slot rail, other three slot rail. compared to an 08 Shadow..the frames are different. undercut under triggerguard and under the beavertail are deeper on the Shadow.

Anyone have any imput on if the frames are the same as the shadow on new sp-01's? It's hard to imagine a company holding out on using a new frame for just the one variation of the pistol. I'm wondering because my dealer has a brand new sp-01 that he has labled "tactical" in his case with night sights, a 3 notch frame but no decocker. I can't remember what it said on the slide but it felt verry nice in my hand. The trigger was horible though, so i'm leaning toward the shadow for the couple extra $$$.

Check the date of manufacture.  If it is an 2006 then it will be the same as described above.

They just got this particular sp-01 last week brand new so i would assume it to be at oldest a 2008. Would this have the same frame as a current shadow?

Check the date of manufacture. The date is on the slide.  I suspect it will be marked 06 as in 2006.  If so it has a difference frame than the Shadow.

I know mine was ordered in February and came with an 09 date stamp on the rail- and I may be wrong but if it isn't a de-cocker is it really a tactical???

it will say Tactical on the slide and have a decocker if its a tactical model..if it has a manual safety it is the std model unless it says Shadow on the slide.
I checked at the local gun shop today at their current models of SP01 and SP01 tacticals and they were not the Shadow frame.
