Galling?
« on: March 16, 2009, 07:11:54 PM »
Hi all,

I'm really looking at the matte stainless 75B...anyone know if there have been any issues with galling?

Thanks

No one?  So I take it there is not a problem?  I hope not as I plan to get a matte model when I can find one.

Zero problems so far! I don't have thousands of rounds through my Stainless yet, and I keep it well lubed, but I haven't had any problems. The slide and frame are probably hardened a little differently to prevent galling, I have absolutely nothing to back that up, just speculating.

No problems here when I had one.

I myself wouldn't worry about it......  How many stainless 1911's do you see running around with high round counts?

Back in the early days of the stainless steel pistols galling was sometimes a problem . But we are talking the late 70's and early 80's. Since then there have been many inprovments in metalurgy and most of those problems have been solved. I started to use  something called RIG back then since it claimed to work well with stainless steel . Its a fairly heavy grease so you dont use very much, and since I live in California, there has never been an issue with it getting to cold and slowing down the action. I also use small amounts of other silicone lubes that are much thinner . I probably tend to overlube slightly, but as long as the bore is not full of oil when I start to shoot I dont worry.
