RAMI: 9mm or .40? Already have another CZ 9mm
« on: May 19, 2009, 05:39:15 PM »
Hi All,

I'm new to this forum and fairly new to CZ's and CCW and shooting generally speaking so please excuse any stupidity.

I have a CZ-75 SP-01 phantom which I love. I also have an FN FNP-9 which is growing on me but I much prefer the CZ.

Both are too big for CCW usage especially in summer.

I've been reading a lot about the RAMI and am fairly intent on getting the decocker version (since my other guns are decockers; I don't want to confuse the muscle memory with manual safetys on some and decockers on others).

I just need to decide 9mm or .40. I was previously thinking stay w/ 9mm because I'm used to CZ 75 in 9mm, and my FNP is 9mm, and I can buy all my rounds in bulk and use in any of my guns.

But the other thing that occurs to me is the current ammo shortage. It seems that 9mm and 45 have the worst shortage, whereas .40 seems much easier to come by. Is there something to be said for diversifying my calibers so that I increase my odds of being able to find ammo for at least one of my firearms?

I've read that the 16 round magazine frmo the 9mm CZ-75 SP-01 can go into the 9mm RAMI in a pinch (obviously it protrudes fairly far). Is this true? Has anyone tried it? That would be a point in favor of getting the 9mm RAMI in my situation.

I've read that the perceived recoil is similar on the RAMI .40 and the RAMI 9mm. Is this true?

Thanks in advance

Ammo shortages aren't going to be around forever.  The market is going to stabilize and manufacturers will catch up with demand.  I would not let that drive a purchase choice.  If you want the 9, buy the 9.

Of course I'm a happy .40 owner and part of what drove my purchase choice was that I already had an XD40 . .  ammo compatibility is a great thing.  I have my heart set on a P-06 for my next CZ & will probably not ever own a 9.  I am not one of those "If it doesn't start with a 4 it isn't a defensive gun" type guys .. . just at one point I had the choice of 9 or 40 and chose 40 . . .  If I want a CZ in 9, I'll be looking at the 82, because I already have guns in 9X18.

Hope that helps.

I also have an FN P-9 (awesome gun isn't it?) and a bersa thunder .380 for CCW

I also have on order a RAMI in the .40.

I carry the bersa in the summer and will carry the RAMI in fall-spring

If you want the 9 get the 9. I just wanted a little extra punch for a CCW weapon and decided that .40 would be great for me and I would want to carry a .40 RAMI in cooler months. I have a .380 for summer and will probably pick up another 9mm for carry if I find one I like.

It has been a cakewalk finding .40 and I think it will stay this way because 9 is such a common round that everyone shoots and 45 is used by a lot of people for self defense.

Both .40 and 9mm in RAMI are awesome. Just depends on what you want.

Don't be surprised if you find yourself carrying the RAMI .40 in the summer.

MUCH more power in either 9mm+P or .40 S&W than a .380.

OH, yes. Thanks for thinking CZ!

I'm a big fan of 40 S&W CZ's!!  My constant companion is a RAMI 40...and I really believe that the 40 is perfect for concealed carry.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I decided to go with the 9mm BD version and got it last Thursday. I love the weight and feel.

Took it to the range on Friday and loved it. My first shot was dead-center on the bull's eye at 7 yards using Winchester White-box 115gr fmj from walmart (I believe somebody else reported the same happy experience and said they should have stopped there. Me too). The rest were mostly pretty good, a few more bullseyes and a few outliers when firing rapidly but I need to get used to it. I didn't take the time to measure the groups but will do that next time.

Came with two 14-round mags. I have a few 10-rounders on order for better concealability. I can see that the grip might be an issue with the 10-round mags (no place for pinky) but I tried holding it with no magazine at all, to simulate a 10-rounder, and didn't have a problem tucking my pinky underneath, I still had a sturdy grip.

One question. Per my picture below, it is engraved CZ 2075 D RAMI. The one on the CZ website says CZ 2075 BD rami (http://www.cz-usa.com/data/productimg/main106.png). The package on my said BD on the label. I know the D indicates decocker and the B indicates firing pin block. Why did they drop the B from the engraving? (The box says BD). I can't imagine they would drop the actual firing pin block feature.

The RAMI fits perfectly in my V-Line top drawer gun safe along with my CZ-75 SP-01 Phantom and FN P-9. Nice to fit 3 guns, two of the full-size, in a two-gun safe.

Currently looking for the ideal IWB holster. For now, I'm using a glock 26 ankle holster which isn't ideal, tactically speaking, but fits it well.

You have a nice CZ collection there.

The Phantom doesn't look very big in that box.

CZ2075bd

Love seeing someone else with that wonderful FN P-9 in the stainless and black. Same gun I have and it's accurate as hell, light enough to carry, and well made. Besides it just looks bleep sexy haha.

It was my first pistol I ever bought and I can't ever bring myself to sell it because it's just so reliable. Over 3000 rounds through mine and it's never jammed! Never a hiccup out of it!

Yeah, the FNP-9 is a sharp looking gun, that's how I first noticed it at a show. The price was right and I was impressed how it's so easy to field strip with the slide lock lever. For some reason I am much more accurate with my CZ's than with my FNP, though. Hence the laser on the FNP :)

The FN P-9 has some serious muzzle flip due to the polymer bottom. I do OK with it in competitions, but I used a friend's CZ 75 for a reshoot one day and cut my times in half just by being faster and more accurate.

Next purchase is an SP-01 Shadow for me!
