CZ-82 recoil spring question
« on: July 20, 2009, 12:17:21 PM »
The CZ-82 9mm Makarov, by default, comes with a 14.5 lb recoil spring. I don't find the recoil on this gun, shooting silver bear and Hornady, to be excessive. Matter of fact; it's quite comfortable.

Is there ANY BENEFIT to ordering a 16.5 or 18.5 lb wolff recoil spring? Is there HOTTER ammo out there that would be more forgiving on the CZ-82 if it had a stronger spring? If I bought the 18.5 lb recoil spring; would it be TOO STIFF for the traditional standard ammo available? In other words; would there be feeding and/or ejection problems because the existing rounds are "Strong Enough" to send the slide back all the way? Thank for the input.

christcorp - my understanding is the 16lb. wolff spring will reduce the felt recoil even more than the stock spring your 82 came with, and should work well with all standard ammo plus any of the hotter stuff. The 18lb. spring you would use if you were reloading your own cartridges and were loading at the maximum end of the load data.

I have read numerous posts about folks replacing the stock spring with the 16lb. wolff spring and reducing the felt recoil, I myself, like you do not find the recoil bad at all it is very manageable. I will be purchasing the the wolff spring kit and trying them out to see what differences there are, but also to help tailor my gun with the loads I will be developing for it. I plan on experimenting with some 100gr Hollow Points and FMJ next month.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. I just came back from the range. I go at least once a week, sometimes more. Each time, I practice something different. When I practice with my CCW pistol, I set the targets at between 20-30 feet. I believe that for self defense (No home defense); this is about the max distance you will need. If you are further than this, you should be running the other direction. Anyway; I regress.

Today, I practiced walking/moving, stop, pop 3 rounds, walk/move again, stop, pop 3 rounds, etc... And just for the hell of it, I did it today totally 1 handed. At 20-30 feet, 1 handed, all 12 rounds of the magazine were on target. Doing the same thing with my opposite hand; (You never know when you might not be able to shoot with your normal hand); I hit 10 of 12 one handed. (I need some more practice on that). Anyway; the recoil shooting from 1 handed; either hand; didn't bother me in the least. And, because there doesn't seem to be any "HOT" ammo out there, I will probably just stay with the existing recoil spring. I was just thinking if BuffaloBore, Double-Tap, etc... were to come out with a 1200 fps / 300+ ft/lb self defense ammo, if the 18# spring would be a better choice. "MORE IMPORTANTLY"; if I chose the 18# recoil spring, would it be "TOO MUCH" for common everyday ammo? In other words; would the slide not have enough distance retracting, because the spring is too stiff and the ammo too weak, and I risk the chance of stove pipes, mis-feeds, etc....? Thx....

From what I have researched and read the 18lb. spring would be too stiff for everyday ammo,  if and when the manufacturers start putting out some hotter loads then I would try the 18lb spring.

The 16lb. seems to be the sweet spot for most folks in reducing recoil and still achieving reliable functioning, the other two benefits I have read about is the time back on target is quicker due to the reduced recoil and the spent casings land a bit closer, so if you reload you should have an easier time collecting up your used brass.

I'll be able to speak from personal experience in a few weeks, as I will be ordering the Recoil Calibration Pack from Wolff Springs later this week.

The Recoil Calibration Pack that Wolff Springs sells is a great value, you get great springs, plus 3 firing pins, so you've got spare parts plus and your ready to go if the "Hotter" ammo does come out from the manufacturers, or you decide to start reloading.

Husk; just a small correction. (I'm sure you know this). The calibration packs, besides coming with all 3 recoil springs: 14.5; 16.5; 18.5; come with 3 firing pin SPRINGS. It doesn't come with firing PINS. And while that is a good deal for the kit, it's actually cheaper to buy the 16.5 and 18.5 instead of the kit. They both come with a firing pin spring; but there's no need to get the 14.5 being it's already in your gun. And you'll save another $3 out of the deal.  But I have ordered numerous wolff spring kits in the past. Definitely great products; and a great company.

You are correct sir, I didn't finish typing my thoughts. I do that at times.

Hadn't priced it the way you have it layed out, my current springs are in good shape so it would be wasted money for the 14.5 springs.

Thanks for the heads up on that.

Ordering them this weekend. The 16.5 and 18.5 units.

FWIW, the 18.5# has been the "sweet spot" on my cz82's. Function well with all types of factory ammo I have tried. Silver Bear-HP, Wolf, B-Bear, Hungarian-MFS, Hornady, S&B, and some Russian military I had laying around.
