82 with HP a good carry combinatin?
« on: October 11, 2009, 10:17:13 AM »
Just curious as to opinions if the CZ 82 with Silver Bear 94 grain HPs is a good defensive carry package?  How many of you carry this pistol on a regular basis?  Thanks for any insight.

my qualifications for a good carry weapon:

1) goes bang when you pull the trigger, repeatedly

2) you have trained with it till its operation is second nature

3) you actually have it with you, in a good holster, when the bleep goes down

some rounds are more effective than others, but they are all effective it you can do your part and make the hits. That is the extend of my limited knowledge. If you can shoot it well, and conceal it well; it's perfect!

82 will be my next pistol purchase after my rifle build is finished

I now carry a CZ 82 all the time.  Can't hurt to have 12+1 when the !@## goes down.

it certainly can be a good load for your needs. Is it possible for you to shoot outside a public range where you could set up some non-traditional targets?

Some good ones that come to mind could be multiple water filled water jugs to see penetration, or similar would be multiple spaced board for penetration. Even items like melons or pumpkins can give you and idea of what may best suited for your needs, you could even make your own ballistic gel from internet recipes.

Also remember that you do not have to have one type of ammo in your mag, for instance you may have a FMJ round followed by 2 JHP and repeat.

I really liked the 9 x 18 Makarov as a carry round and my CZ 83 in 9 x 18 was my carry pistol for several years before I bought my .40 S&W RAMI. I bought several boxes of various 9 x 18 rounds and shot them out in the desert at cans, soda bottles, etc. It was a great time!

The '82 is a good choice.  I don't know how well the Brown/Silver bear ammo will perform for expansion.  I'd go with the Hornady 95gr XTP-HP's.  It's one of the few commercial HP's left for the Mak.  Buy a few boxes and ensure feed and function before changing however.
